Clothing Poll:

I was cleaning out my dresser and closet last night. Out of boredom since DH is OOT until tomorrow. But I was going through my socks and I found some with holes in the toes so I threw them away. I was also talking to my mom and she told me that she uses old holely socks as dusting rags. I have never thought of this.

I do recycle DH's old holely shirts as cleaning rags but never thought about using socks.

Do you try to recycle old clothes as a use around the house or do you just throw them away?

ETA: edited for spelling check....

Re: Clothing Poll:

  • Definitely recycle. Goodwill apparently will recycle unwearable clothing, too.
  • We definitely use DH's old shirts for cleaning rags and especially for garage rags.  His socks are too gross to be useful by the time I can get them thrown out.  I try to donate clothes that someone could wear.
  • I am horrible and just thorw then away. Embarrassed

I give my clothes that I no longer want to Goodwill but there are some things that I could never bring myself to give to them. And I'm sure they do receive some very questionable items. I wonder if they go through those bags wearing a mask and have their hands double gloved. I know I would!

  • We keep a few old clothes on hand for such purposes, but we throw most of them away.  I wish I was better at going to Goodwill and donating clothes, but I never seem to make it there.  And besides, BF has recently developed an addiction to microfiber cloths and now we have more dusting cloths than I know what to do with.
  • DH keeps some pieces of his old shirts for cleaning--mainly garage and car-related stuff. His socks get thrown out though because they're super gross. My socks will often get recycled as a licking deterrent for when my dog gets a lick granuloma on his leg.

As far as wearable clothes, I usually toss them into one of those bins they have set up all over the city for used clothing. I used to throw them out a lot, but it's just so wasteful. Now that those bins are everywhere, donating them is a breeze.

I used to volunteer at a Goodwill Type store and you would be shocked at the number of old bras and used panties those places get.  I wanted to throw them away, but the people who ran the store said they would sell.

Ewww.... seriously? Yeah I am not the type of person who would donated her used bras and panties so someone else could use them. That just gives me the heebee jeebees.

  • Some of these responses induce a *headdesk* reaction for me. :/

We only get one planet, people, and we're SERIOUSLY screwing with the one we have.

I'm officially classifying recycling as my soapbox issue. :)

  • We keep all of the old t-shirts either as rags or work clothes.  Jeans that have holes get put into a box, one day I am going to make a huge blanket...  One day!  Old socks have never been a thought but they are now, I imagine they would be great at scrubbing the oven and stuff like that.

Clothes that are in good shape get donated, I think I have someone call at least once a month to pick up donations so we just keep a basket in the hall closet for random things.

  • I donate old clothes to Goodwill when I get around to it...the latest batch has been waiting a year-ish to be taken in. I've seen those ubiquitous donations donation bins around town, so I should just toss the bag of clothes in my trunk and stop next time I see one. I don't often shop for clothing, plus I usually end up wearing most of my clothes out, so I rarely throw anything wearable away.

I like to use old socks as dusting rags.  They convenient to slip over your hand, dampen, then dust fragile or odd shaped items.

  • We donated all of our clothes we got rid of in the move to SA.  Also took all of my home decor/greenery that no longer fit my style.

I think my next project is going to be buying tons of NEW underwear to go donate to GW/SA so no one has to wear someone's crusty ass used panties on the daily.  It makes me cringe to the extreme.  The bras don't really bother me...but underwear?  Gross.

  • We donate clothes and stuff from the house all the time.  I feel like the bin in the garage for donations is always full.

As for socks, my H is really bad about wearing them until the holes in them are huge and he folds the clothes a lot so I never see them.

As for crusty used underwear - EWWWWWW!!!!!  That is the one thing I will not donate.  Bras I have no issue with, but underwears I have issues with.

"Underwears." Because I am wildly immature, that's giving me the giggles. Actually, you're right....donating underwear(s) is kind of creepy. I could see tossing that particular article of clothing...but that's the only one I can come up with.

  • I'm immature too, it makes me giggle.  Fart jokes make me giggle too.

  • Most of H's clothes get worn until the are holey and horrible.  Once they aren't in good enough condition to wear to work, he wears them to do yard work or work around the house and then past that they are pretty much trash.  Sometimes he uses old shirts for rags in the garage.

Old socks ususally get made into dog toys.  Our dog loves to chew on old socks.

Stuff that is still wearable gets donated.

On the underwear/bra thing...wearing someone elses undies I think is gross.  Bras I am okay with though.  I have donated bras that I outgrew after only wearing a couple of times.
