Has anybody read "What is the What"
by Dave Eggers?
I just finished it and loved it. The story was very powerful and I found the writing to be equally captivating. I was going to recommend it to November yesterday but it's not really beach reading. It is actually heartbreaking, but in a "things will get better" way.
I haven't been buying many books lately and when I do, I don't buy them new or pay full price. I finished the book right before my plane landed Wednesday night and the first thing I saw when I got off the plane was a new book by Dave Eggers and I bought it impulsively. I loved What is the What so much I was convinced I would love the next one.

I think with any kind of aid there will be undeserving people who benefit. Since we live in such an imperfect world, you have to look at the overall effect of the aid. If 80% goes to deserving people, who cares about the 20% that doesn't? You just can't control it.
It did, however, make me want to give to the Valentino Achek Deng foundation. I would feel confident that a large portion of my donation would go to the right place and the right people, given his experience with NGOs and aid.

"What is the What" was really good. I also really liked "You Shall Know Our Velocity", also by Dave Eggers.
