Venting...

This could be long.

So, my birthday has kind of been skipped over the past two years ? 23rd was right after we got back from California where we got engaged, and I had to work on my 24th.  This year, I found out that the Stars opening night is on my birthday ? and they are playing the Red Wings ? and Mike Modano (who played for us his entire career) is now playing for the Red Wings ? needless to say it?s a HUGE game.  (I used to work for the team, too)

I was thinking ? there isn?t anything I really want or need ? so it would be really fun to fly out to Dallas to go to the game.  The flight from Lubbock to Dallas is like an hour.  We could take a half day off on Thursday ? fly out to the game, and fly back the next morning.  My parents love the idea and said they would pay for our flights for my birthday present, and the tickets to the game would be free.

I brought the idea up to DH and he almost immediately shut it down.  ?It?s a long way to go for just a night?? I?m pissed.  Like, really pissed.  I thought maybe it was just PMS but I can?t stop sulking about it.  I mean, I understand not wanting to go for just one night ? but if it were his birthday I would put my own annoyances aside to do something special for him.

He kept saying that he would love to schedule a trip home, but for a long weekend ? where we could spend more time out there.  It isn?t about that though ? it?s my birthday ? I want to go to that game.  I can?t decide if I should bring it up again or not.  I probably should because I?m so annoyed? ugh.

Large glass of red wine to you if you made it all the way through this.  I?m just frustrated and PMSing and needed to vent.  Advice is welcome!  Love you ladies!

Re: Venting...

  • I definitely think you should bring it up again and stress that this is something you would like to do for your birthday. In my family birthdays were always kind of a big deal, and the birthday girl/boy always got to do whatever he/she wanted. Now that I'm older & married I still feel the same way and I make a big deal out of Ted's birthday. Probably bigger then he would like.

So yes I think you should definitely bring it up again.

  • If this were me...I would book it and then tell DH...LOL.
  • Since you wouldn't be flying out until Thursday night, can you both take Friday off from work and make it long weekend?  I know you just relocated and having  new jobs might be a vacation day issue...just a thought.  Even so, I would definitely talk with DH again and stress how important this is to you.

  • Personally...I'd go by myself.  It's not like you are being overly ridiculous about with expenses.  He can't take one night for an hour flight?  Really?  Poo on him then.

    This!

  • i'd bring it up again. you're flight is an hour, it's not like you're flying across the country. plus, this is like three birthdays rolled in to one - tell him that. i'd definitely bring it up again because if not, you're going to stew over it. i totally understand your wanting to go - DH and I have traveled all over for all sorts of sporting events. AND my bday was skipped over two years ago (we got engaged in chicago on may 13, my bday is may 18) and last year it was kind of forgotten between showers and bachelorette parties and whatnot. this past year was still fairly ho hum.
  • Thanks for all the advice!!!  I have to work the next weekend which is why we can't just take a long weekend trip home - plus everybody is going to Vegas that weekend for my little brother's 21st birthday.

I'm going to bring it up again to him - just to explain why I got upset.  If we go, great... if not... that's okay too.  I can take no for an answer, I just think I need to let him know why I'm upset about it.

PMS isn't helping - but at least I know that I am justified in being moody about it!

    THANKS girls!!!!

  • It's your 25th right? I made a big fuss about my 25th too. I say go for it. Bdays should be a big deal especially when you're a quarter century!

Yes! Quarter century birthday should be fun! And I say you don't take no for an answer. It's important to you, it's an AWESOME idea. Go.

  • ditto pp's!  With everything you've said (missing out on past bdays, your parents paying for the flight, free game tickets, and the flight only being an hour!) and because it would mean so much to you, I think DH needs to rethink his position, personally. Good luck!
