Celebration Cards

What do you do with old cards? I feel guilty for throwing them away especially if they're from my grandparents or a very sick Aunt...but I have HUNDREDS of them. What about graduation and wedding cards? Should I just get rid of them?

Re: Celebration Cards

  • I bought a large circle shaped craft punch (it was a MS one from Michael's) and punch out the fronts of our wedding cards then made them into ornaments that I hang on a Christmas tree.
  • I only keep them if they're really special from someone or from my boys.  Do you really need 50 cards from your aunt, grandma, grandpa, etc?  Do they really say something meaningful to you?  Maybe find a box (you decide on the size) and only fill that box, once it's full, you have to get rid of one to add one.
  • I have the EXACT same issue! I tend to keep all cards that are given to me. DH thinks it's a problem. haha. As far as wedding cards go, my best friend had a great idea! When she scrapbooked her wedding, she typed up quotes and advice that she felt was most meaningful and put them in the scrapbook. Also, if she had a card that had a 3-D decoration on the front, she removed it and used it as an embelishment. Very unique/cute way of keeping those "special memories" together.

As far as birthday cards go, after moving in with DH, I had ot cut back on a lot of stuff. What I did was tossed the ones that didn't have any real meaning... OR if I coudln't remember what they were for/year I got it... I tossed it. If the card just said "happy birthday" or signitures, it got tossed too.

I also like the box idea. I use a photo box for my cards and it's perfect! :)

    Good Luck! :)

  • I save my Christmas cards and the following year I cut out the pictures and use them as gift tags. I write the receiver's name on the back and punch a hole in the corner to string a ribbon through.
  • I'd keep 1 or two for sentimental reasons and probably recycle the rest.
  • I only keep cards from H my parents, the inlaws, sympathy cards for my daughter (which I scrapbooked) and my grandparents. Even then I only save the ones that have something really nice written in them.

I chucked our wedding cards, save the ones from really close family.

I do scan other cards in our digital frame then throw the cards out, so they are on "Display" and "Saved" until I feel the need to get rid of the them altogether.

  • I keep cards that are from a special family member (grandparent, etc.), that mark a milestone (a couple of graduation cards, wedding, etc.) and ones that are meaningful (thank yous from students if they have a special message in them). Otherwise, I throw them out. They usually get piled and kept for a while and then I go through them and toss them.

I like the Christmas tree ornament idea!
