BC & antibiotics

Ok, so I'm going to clog the board with another BC question. However, I've read the leaflet, and searched online, and can't get to my doctor until Monday and it's driving me crazy.

I started the antibiotic Keflex (penicillan replacement) on Sunday (same day as my first pill of the pack--I take Ocella) for a tooth infection. How long should I used a condom until I can not worry about an unplanned pregnancy? In the leaflet it just says to use a backup method, but states no length of time. Same online. So, do I stick with it for the duration of the antibiotic only, the whole pack, or just try not to stress myself about it until I talk to my doc on Monday?

Re: BC & antibiotics

  • My doc always told me to use backup until at least a week after I finished the antibiotics.

  • When I was on BC I always did 7 days after I took the last antibiotic.
  • I was told to use a back up method for 7 days but you may want to use it longer than that...just ask my daughter.  She will be born in a couple weeks  ;)

  • I have been told to use a back up method for the duration of the BC pack you are on.  Better safe than sorry, but I would check with your doctor tomorrow.
  • Thanks a bunch. I figured I would just wait out the pack, but I just needed some sort of verification. But I'll still talk to my doc.

  • At least 2-3 weeks after you stop the pills (I know. It sucks.). Plus, my mom said that in some cases antibiotics can confuse your body so much that you can actually drop 2 eggs! Can somebody say TWINS!?  If you're really worried about getting pregnant, your best bet is to use a backup method until after your next period.

Can antibiotics decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills?

The effects of antibiotics on birth control pills may be overstated ? except in the case of one antibiotic, rifampin. Studies clearly show that rifampin decreases the effectiveness of birth control pills in preventing ovulation. However, rifampin isn't used widely. Chances are you wouldn't be taking it unless you had tuberculosis or had tested positive for the disease.

Hypothetically speaking, other antibiotics, particularly penicillin and tetracycline derivatives, could impair the effectiveness of birth control pills in a small percentage of women. Researchers can't rule out this possibility, but no large studies have proved such an effect.

If you're taking a newer, extremely low-dose oral contraceptive, you could be more susceptible to this potential antibiotic effect. If you're concerned, consider using a barrier method of contraception for the duration of your antibiotic prescription.
