Changing your name is so obnoxious ...

It took an hour at the Social Security office and another half hour at the DMV. Then I just spent an hour on the phone with my credit card companies -- most of them would take it over the phone but for the card I use the most (the Visa I got at my bank) I have to fill out a form and send it back to them! Indifferent Getting new checks and getting me added to H's bank accounts also took about an hour today at the bank, and I still need to actually go and close my accounts (I want to switch over my direct deposits and direct debits and make sure they're working before I close my old accounts) and transfer the funds to our joint account. Luckily we did already happen to bank at the same bank before we got married so we're at least not dealing with two separate institutions.

I have a huge pile of those store rewards cards that you get for your grocery store, Ulta, Hallmark, Best Buy, etc. but I so don't feel like working on it now! Not to mention I haven't even called to switch my car insurance to my new name yet ... is this name change thing super time consuming for anyone else?

  • Yes! It''s absolute madness. At least you're lucky to have a SS Office in your area. The nearest one to me is about 600 miles away, so everything has to be mailed in. Oh, and the DMV! Only 30 minutes for you?? Come to California and wait in the 4 hour line (with appointment!) for me, will ya? Hahaha. I feel your pain! And it's always so disappointing when I sign my maiden name to something that hasn't been switched over yet. =p

  • i really didn't see that much of a problem with it. I'm sorry you are having such a hard time with it. It only took 20 minutes for me to change 4 accounts including my visa. The DMV was easy too, but H got the form before we left for the wedding for me.

  • I feel really lucky with the stuff I've had to deal with so far. The SS office is about 30-40 minutes away, but I went and there was no one else in there so it took all of two minutes. Then I backtracked to our town to the DMV and there were only three people in line so I filled out the form and it took about five minutes once I was at the front of the line. I still have to do all my bank stuff and loans, but I think everything else is pretty much done.
  • I'm in Canada, so we have to wait for our marriage certificate to come in the mail before I can really get busy with it. I think there is a site you can use in the States to change everything, maybe you should check it out! I think it is called Miss to Mrs or something like that?

At least on facebook it only takes about 30 seconds, LOL!

  • I feel your pain, too!!  Some things were really easy to change but, 3 hours in a hot, smelly DMV was horrid and my student loans are making me send them proof of the name change and a form...I just don't have the time for that, ugh!  There are some cards that I just haven't changed yet because its so hard to find the time!

  • I wish I was still in Cleveland for all the changes! I am dreading going to the DMV in Chicago.  I am changing my name and getting a new license here and have to transfer the title for my car, etc. I needed to wait for proper items with my new address on them before I could even go there (insurance, retirement statements, etc).  I am expecting it to take a couple of hours tomorrow.  Last time I got my license renewed in Cleveland, I didn't have any of the paperwork with me (like didn't know you now need to show your SS card, etc).  Luckily a friend of my mom's works at the one in Parma Hts and vouched for me.

I found it amazing how easy it was to change my name with credit card companies.  However, I had problems changing my address 2 years ago when I moved into and out of a slumlord apartment within 24 hours-  so this time around I first did everything I could online and then called the next day to verify. I need to call Kohls and get another new card b/c they royally screwed up the spelling of my new last name!

My retirement account requires a certified copy of the marriage certificate.  I still need to change my name at my bank and at our bank (I am keeping my old account for a while and we opened up a new joint one at a different bank).

  • Yes, it is rough and time consuming.  My bank made it a huge deal and the lady was rude. People get married all the time! I got to the SS office as it was opening and was 6th in line and the DMV was quick too.  This is the fastest DMV I have ever been to and when I moved my aunt said go to it b.c. no one is there.  The bank said it will take 2 weeks to update so I am waitingon CCs, work ,etc.  Also my SS card should come in two weeks. I am tired of having two names everywhere!
  • I'm sorry you're having such a hard time getting your name changed. I feel very lucky that it's been a pretty easy and painless process for me. I had my SS and License changed in the same day...within about an hour (and that included driving time!). Luckily for us we already had a joint bank account so it was just a matter of changing my name on the accounts/cards/checks. I actually took care of the last major thing this weekend - my passport. Which also was as easy as filling out a form and sending it with a copy of our marriage certificate and my old passport.

  • I guess I really can't complain after seeing all the problems some of you are going through!  My waits have been managable, the most probably being at the DMV at 30 minutes or so.  I'm currently going through all of the bank stuff.  We filled out papers to get me on DH's account (which includes three different forms!) and to get my name changed but were dumb and mailed out the name change form after all the other forms so they can't be processed since the name on them is my new name.  So, some of them were mailed back (ugh) and some were put on hold.
