Is the Dyson Vacuum the only

vacuum worthy buying?  We don't have a pet....and it is just the two of us.  Someone suggested a Kenmore but the reviews aren't great.  Anyway, we have carpet throughout the house except for the kitchen, laundry rooms, basement, and bathrooms.  We have purchased two vacuums and returned both.  Apparently, I don't have a clue what I am doing.  Please help...thx.

Re: Is the Dyson Vacuum the only

  • I have had a few brads- Kenmore and Bissell and love the our Dyson best.  It just picks up more.  We have hardwoods and tile with just area rugs and I love how much gunk the Dyson picks up from the floors- especially the rugs, so I am sure you would love it for your carpets.

  • I have a Eureka Boss Smartvac and love it. I was highly reviewed on Amazon, sucks like crazy, works great on our pet hair. It also does hard/tile floors. It runs about $150 at BB&B. I have the previous version to what they sell now, so I'm not sure if there's added features or what.

My mom has a Kirby and that thing is amazing. I don't think there's anything it can't do. I've seen comparison studies of the Kirby to other brands and they consistently outperform, but they also cost an arm and leg, so it's truely a investment item. My grandmother had hers 40 years and it was still running great, so I guess it's really a case of getting what you pay for.

DH works at a place that sells Dysons and he swears it's all hype. He says a lot get returned and the ones they use to clean the store break frequently (his complaints are mostly on the ball ones, so I can't speak to the other versions).

Agreed. I had 2 vacuums before buying the Dyson, and neither of them lasted longer than 18 months. I LOVE vacuuming now and DH and I still fight over who gets to vacuum (we have had it for 2 years). I did "the test" when I first bought it. I vacuumed using the old vacuum (that wasn't completely dead, just not working right), then vacuuming using the Dyson. I was shocked by how much dirt my previous vacuum missed. Since then I have been in love. It defintiely lives up to its reputation and a couple weeks after buying it I wasn't even worried about the price we paid. Definitely worth it.

  • Go for the Dyson.  I have a Dyson Animal and its just my hubby and I in a 900 square foot apartment.  It is amazing!
  • I agree with the Dyson...I've had mine for over 4 years and it's still going strong!  Just because you don't have animals, doesn't mean you shouldn't get it (they have other great and smaller versions than the Dyson Animal that work just as well and are much less expensive).  If you're not wanting to spend that much, I would recommend a Bissell (that is the next brand I would go to).

I've had a Bissell for over two years and I've never had an issue with it.  I refuse to spend what a Dyson costs.  That's absurd.

This. I have tile, hardwood, carpet and two full flights of stairs and I would never buy a Dyson. I have a Bissel Lift-Off Pet Hair Eraser. It was $170 at Target and it works just as well as my mom's Dyson (yes we compared).

This is the same vacuum I had... used it for about 14 months before it started dying. I only lived in a small apartment, and vacuumed 2-3 times per week. Maybe mine was a lemon, maybe I could have taken it to the repairman? Regardless, I got my Dyson on sale for I think $275-300 at Costco and as mentioned earlier, no regrets!

  • We have a cat and dog (Great Pyrenese/Mastiff mix, so A LOT of shedding!), and hardwood floors throughout our house with area rugs. We got the Dyson vacuum at Bed Bath and Beyond...they let us use one of the 20% off coupons on it that they send through the mail, so got a really good deal on it. We LOVE it! It made all the area rugs look like new the first time we used it. It also goes easily on the different floors without having to switch any settings. Hope this helps!

yep, going on 6 years with ours and it's still like-new. We've never had it serviced or anything.

That said... I'm feeling antsy for change (but that's just my personality ;) and I'm looking at Miel ones for next time. I'm thinking I don't want upright anymore because it kills my back and I want something lighter. Who knows when the time will come for a new one though ;)

  • I've been a Dyson owner for over 2 years now, I love love love it!! I have the Allergy & Asthma one. The price is a little high but well worth it!!
  • We had a Dyson and were not impressed AT ALL. Ours would get clogged with every use.

We now have Riccar canister vacuum and we LOVE it. They are pricey but worth every dollar especially if you have pets. I would highly highly recommend. We got the most basic model to save a few dollars and have no complaints other than it does take bags.

Ditto this.  We had a Dyson at work and it just blew stuff around and didn't pick anything up unless you were moving very slowly.  I think Hoover makes great vacuums.

  • I LOVE my Dyson... I wouldn't buy any other brand again - but hopefully I won't need too for a long while!

    Good luck vacuum shopping! :)

  • I love my dyson! yes they are pricey but they are amazing!!! and they have a five year manufacturers warranty. Its amazing. don't know what I would do without it

  • I HATE mine with a passion. It's heavy, it's cumbersome, it doesn't fit under the the toekick lip on the counters, and I hate taking the handle apart to use an attatchment. Who thought that was a good idea?

I grew up in a Kirby household, and as soon as this POS bites the dust, we'll be investing in one.

  • They are a bit on the expensive side. I think it may be just a marketing hype. I love my Hoover Windtunnel Canister (http://www.hoover.com/product.aspx?model=S3765040&ds=false) It works so well, easy to empty and clean the filter. It had great reviews.
  • I got a refurb Dyson off of woot for under $200 and I love it.  Its the old turquoise one.  I'm not sure I would have paid more than $200 but it works well on the tons and tons of pet hair we have.  I am very happy with it.

A month ago, we had a kirby demonstration.  They wanted roughly $2,000 for it.  More if you wanted more attachments.  It was pretty amazing.  They vacuumed 1 spot 100 times with my dyson and then the spot 2 times with the kirby and it still picked up a ton of dirt.  But we only have carpeting in 2 rooms and the hallway, and I can't justify $2000 vacuum.

  • I have never had a Dyson but I love my Miele.  We have all hardwoods and it is great.  I love that I can vacuum underneath the beds and furniture. Also it's not heavy which is nice because we have three stories to lug it up and down.  And I like that it has bags, I have horrible allergies and I hated emptying my canister vac.  This is so much cleaner.  It is pricey but worth it, my parents had theirs for about 15 years before they had to replace it.
