Office Space Privacy Question
Say you are out for the day. Your office has an employee show up for the day and needs a spot to put them. Your boss decides to put them in your personal office. Do you have a problem with this? You wouldn't know in advance they are coming so you may have your things out everywhere and the person would have to clean it up a little in order to work.
My thought is that your office space is owned by your workplace, not you. They can do whatever they please. Do you agree? Would you be angry knowing someone was randomly working in your office that day?
Re: Office Space Privacy Question
By and large, I agree w/ you. My office may be "mine", but it's not really mine. I have no expectation of privacy, to be honest. And even though it's locked, everyone knows where the spare keys are.
The only caveat would be if you work at a job that has sensitive information. When I worked in HR, I know they wouldn't do this because there would be a chance the personal/sensitive information may be on someone's desk.

I agree with the bolded part. I would not be "angry" that someone was randomly working in my office. A bit peeved for not mentioning it before hand so I can clear off the desk, but not angry.
I'd probably be inwardly annoyed, but I'd keep it in check and obviously not voice it because rationally, I know and agree that the space is the employer's not mine.
I'd just be a little annoyed at not having notice/an opportunity to pick up a little first. I wouldn't want a coworker to open one of my desk drawers and find my stash of tampons, you know?
LOL! so true.
Yes, technically the office space is owned by the workplace. However, I think a lot of it depends on the company (or department) culture and local expectations. In my department, people regularly use my desk when I'm not there. (In fact, I was working out of our other office for two weeks and came back to discover all of my pens missing and that my boss had borrowed my laptop but neglected to return the power cable. Annoying, but not surprising.) I have no expectation of privacy, so I don't get bent out of shape when my space gets used in my absence.
In other departments, though, visitors would be put in a spare cubicle, conference room, etc. before encroaching on what is perceived as "personal space." And I don't think they're in the wrong for feeling that way...if you are led to believe, either explicitly or based on past observations, that no one is going to touch your stuff, I can definitely see some people being ticked off that someone did. (Although I suspect a lot would depend on who the visitor was and how they treated your space.)
Honestly, no I do not have a problem with it. I understand that my office, isn't actually mines...its the company's. I don't have anything too personal in my office, and anything that is personal I keep locked in my desk. At my job, all of the management, including our Admin Asst. have master keys, so they can enter my office at any time. This is another reason why I've never kept anything of real value or personal in my office.
I wouldn't say I'd be comfortable with someone just doing what they "please" in my office. I would want them to be respectful of the space and my things. It would be really agitating to have someone come in my office and completely move things around or mess something up and not fix it or put it back where it goes. Like I said, as long as I felt they were respectful of my space and things, I'd have no problem with someone using my office.
