This poll came about because I'm very annoyed that DH's parents haven't come to see us at all this year. But DH still wants to head up there at Xmas (for the 4th time this year) to see his family. I LOVE his family, but we need to share the burden of traveling.
How far away do your parents/IL's live from you? 4 hours/ 12 hours (with traffic)

Do you have a set schedule for who goes where? We used to rotate Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter between our parents
If so, how did this schedule get set? This was set since we were dating
Are there any future plans to change the schedule? If so, why? Since we live further away, I'm sick of traveling every single holiday. My parents have never been here. They came to Pittsburgh three times in the 5 years I was there. My ILs were here for a couple days in Jan. for the first time. I refused to travel around the holidays, so I go after T-Day and before Xmas. If I could afford it, I'd go home way more. I have never been to Portland (they have lived there for 3 years). I have not seen my Dad in 5 years.
We see my inlaws on a regular basis
How often do your parents/IL's come visit you? My mom came to visit us last Oct. My dad last came to the state for my HS Graduation in 1999.

I really wanted to go to Portland this year in November to see my mom and welcome my sister to the USA, but with my new volunteer schedule I really don't know if I will have time to go.How far away do your parents/IL's live from you? 12+ hours/15+ hours (Depends on traffic--especially to my parents since they live in a place with horrible traffic) driving or easy 2 hour trips if we can get a good flight out of Greensboro
How often do go to visit your parents/IL's? We tend to combine trips up north when we can--especially for holidays--and thankfully our parents are good enough friends with each other that sometimes they make it easier and travel to the other's respective house when we come to town.
How often do your parents/IL's come visit you? My parents come down more frequently than my IL's--I'd say my folks come down 2-3 times a year, Dh's parents come down 1-2 times per year.

If so, how did this schedule get set? It's pretty willy nilly at this point. It's always been this way, which is both fortunate and unfortunate for us.

Do you have a set schedule for who goes where?No, but they are very understanding of each other and don't complain about getting more time or whatever. We usually spend more time with my parents because the ILs like in the middle of no where with no cell phone or internet and it's boring.

If so, how did this schedule get set? Well this year we're staying here for Thanksgiving, we do Christmas Eve with his mom's family and we drive to my parents house at like 3am Christmas day. Other holidays are usually spent with his grandparents.
Are there any future plans to change the schedule? If so, why? Might change once we have kids, I'm hoping not though, Christmas is very important to my family.
How far away do your parents/IL's live from you? 4.5-5, though it's taken up to 7 w/ bad traffic. My parents also have a beach house that is 4 hrs away and the IL's have a lake house that is 1 1/2 hours away, so sometimes we see them at those places.
How often do go to visit your parents/IL's? Between the 2 sets, we probably go to their reg. homes 8-10 times a year and the beach/lake places 3-4 times. It's not equally divided, it usually depends on events going on in either side of the family.
How often do your parents/IL's come visit you? My parents usually come 2-3 times/year and stay the weekend. His parents probably come 4-5 times/year, but just a day trip from their lake place. They come, hang out for a few hours, buy us dinner, then go on their way.
Do you have a set schedule for who goes where? No, depends on events. We don't usually come up for birthdays or holidays other than Thanksgiving or Christmas, but will for bigger birthdays (60'th) or other one-time events.

Are there any future plans to change the schedule? If so, why? We def. want to stay home more. I used to think our bar was set pretty high for what we consider trip-home worthy, but it seems like events just keep rising to the challenge and it's been exhausting. Some of it is my own doing, like I chose to travel to go wedding dress shopping w/ my BFFs and helped plan a 60'th birthday party for my mom, but most is obligations. This year, I'll have been home 7 weekends just for wedding stuff for my 2 BFFs (co-MOH in their weddings) and another close friend (bridesmaid in hers). Since we're been traveling so much and seeing family wherever we go (all the wedding weekends we either stayed w/ them or they went too), I don't even want them to come see us b/c I want some alone time when I'm at home. I doubt either of us will be in any weddings next year, so hopefully that will allow us to stay home more.How far away do your parents/IL's live from you? My Mom lives 10 minutes away, IL's live about 45 minutes away.

How often do your parents/IL's come visit you? My parents come out prob about 2x year now that DS is here. ILs are coming for the holidays and it will be the first time FIL meets DS in person. MIL came out for his birth.
Do you have a set schedule for who goes where? No. Ideally we will spend Christmas at our house from this year forward as a family and whoever wants to come and join us is welcome to. I don't mind traveling for Thxgiving as much or other times during the year.
