house cleaning

so how often does everyone clean their house and wash floors???? i seem to clean house top to bottom bathroom, lysol the whole bit during the day (everyday) and then vacum and wash floors at night (everynight) when kids are asleep. Hubby thinks i have developed OCD and am becoming a neat freak......someone tell me im normal???!!!

Re: house cleaning

  • Are you a SAHW or SAHM?

I am not.  I don't know when I'd be able to do all that.  I wash floors once a week or when there is an obvious spot or spill.  When DD was a baby I'd mop the kitchen floor every other day and vacuum every day but since she has been mobile and on the big people furniture that is back to 1/week.

  • I used to do that when we first got married. I had nothing to do during the day til school started and with hubby at work and no car I was extremely bored. I wasn't a tv person and couldn't get a library card til we got our first bill so I basically cleaned all day and cooked very elaborate meals. I dusted, vacuumed, mopped, washed the tables and windows, etc every day.

Once the semester started back up, I got over it real quick. I finally had something to do during the day. I still do my whole routine like once a week (occasionally twice) but I find I don't have time for it anymore with everything I ahve going on.

Maybe you need to find something to do during the day to occupy your time.

  • I'm a SAHW and don't do it that much (and we have pets that shed terribly), so I'd probably say you have a slight case of OCD Wink  I have OCD with other things, though, so don't feel bad!

I typically do regular house cleaning once a week (usually on Mondays) and that includes cleaning the floors, tubs, showers, dusting, mopping, vacuuming, etc.  I will, however, go through and vacuum 2-3 times after that depending on how much the animals are shedding.  I'll also sweep up any messes that are made (i.e, kitty litter from the cat throwing it out in the laundry room) as needed.

ETA: Having kids, I could see where you may need to clean up a little more than usual (especially the floors) but I can't see where you would need to do a heavy vacuum/mop every.single.day!

  • I think it's a lot. I sweep floors or swiffer everyday with a good scrubbing once per week. It's still a lot but  live on a farm and everyone's always tracking in and out.

I vacuum once a week, sometimes every other.

I dust 1 room a day so I'm not cleaning what's not dirty over and over again. Takes all of 2 minutes and I stay on top of it that way.

We have 3 bathrooms so I clorox wipe/do toilets/mirrors in one everyday. So they all get hit twice per week. I do a really good deep clean every other week to once a month depending on the bathroom.

I do dishes and wipe kitchen counters everyday.

There's always going to be something to clean, so as long as it's presentable and the clutter is put away I'm good!

  • Even during the summer when I SAH I don't clean the whole house daily.

    2-3 times/week:

sweep, vacuum, laundry, wipe down counters, appliances

    Once a week:

dust, clean bathroom, change bed, mop, glass

I am sure I am missing something, but that's all I can think of right now.  I maintain this schedule during the school year, but it takes a little more effort.  The hardest thing for us is keeping the house "picked up", under the mail or clutter, it's always clean, it may just not be neat.   :)

  • My House is immaculate, And I only take 15 minutes a day and put everything where it belongs if left out and run my shark cordless vac through everything. I do however give my bathroom and my kitchen the most of that time, just to make sure everything is sanitary.

Do you wash the floors every night because you have to (Food and playdoh everywhere) or because you feel you need to? I think that is a major difference between OCD and a neat nelly!

  • No, I don't clean nearly that much / that often. I sweep the floors about every other day to prevent the cat hair from accumulating too much but only mop them 2-3 times a month. I go around, pick things up and straighten things out before bed. I do a surface clean of the kitchen daily - do all the dishes and wipe the surfaces. In the bathroom, I might do a quick wipe once or twice during the week but clean it top to bottom only on the weekend.

It's admirable that you keep your house so clean but I don't find that level of cleanliness to be so necessary... I'd rather spend my time doing other things.

  • i think that's an excessive amount of cleaning to be completely honest.

we do dishes and clean up the kitchen daily, bathroom once/week, declutter a little each day, dust/vacuum etc. once/week, sometimes once every other week.  it's just the 2 of us and no pets, so it really doesn't get all that dirty- we both work full time, so no one is even here to mess it up.  Granted, with a LO, you'll have to clean more, but i can't imagine it ever having to be to that extent.

  • thanks girls..it's official...i have OCD!!!!! no the funny thing is it only takes me 1/2 hour to do all this. its not like i am spending my day cleaning. We do alot of arts and crafts, stories, outdoor play and have playdates everyday so i dont have time to be a slave. just what i call a quick run through. however i do my quick run through everyday.
  • I don't have any kids and still find it difficult to get the kitchen floor washed once per week. I work full time+ I should also mention.
  • Please try not to use the term "OCD" so lightly... and if you really think you have it, you should go see a doctor.

  • Exactly what ringpop said. Please do not use OCD lightly, and don't confuse having OCD with being anal.

You are anal about your house. I highly doubt you have OCD as this doesn't seem to be anxiety related. (Although, like ringpop said, if you think you might have it, go see a psychologist. There are plenty of coping mechanisms out there.)

I have a rotating daily cleaning schedule, with "full scrub down" once a month...but cleaning isn't one of my compulsions so if it doesn't happen that day, oh well.
  • That is a lot of cleaning!  I don't have any kids, but I clean the kitchen everyday (dishes, wiping counters, etc.), vacuum 2-3 times/wk, mop 1 time a wk, & dust, clean bthrm, do laundry, windows, etc. once a wk.

There's nothing wrong with being clean and tidy, but I've found that cleaning certain things every day (like windows, "Swiffering" the floor, etc ) just wastes product because I can't tell the difference if I skip a few days between doing those tasks.  You might save money if you don't clean everyday...just something to think about!
