If you grew up in 4 seasons, quick q

None of my FB friends have an answer, so i thought I'd try here.  Apparently if you have the answer, I need to SHARE it with my FB friends because everyone is flumuxed and deals with the big piles of plastic bins.

I have two kids and it's SUCH A PAIN trying to have 2 seasons worth of clothes in these next 2ish months where it could be 80 or 50 degrees out.

What did you do as a kid, if you remember, with the two amounts of clothes? And don't make me jealous and say you had a huge walk in closet so ALL your clothes fit... lol

For me?  I end up being too cold until I switch out my clothes from the basement, then I guarantee the switch makes me boiling hot as the weather turns 80 after I only have sweaters/jeans to wear :P

  • I guess I must not have had a lot of clothes, because everything fit in my closet plus a dresser, and I certainly didn't have a huge closet when I was a little kid. My closet was not even close to being big - we lived in a 1950's rambler until I was 11, the closets were teeny tiny compared to houses built today!

Maybe bring out just a couple of cold weather items for now? 2-3 sweaters/sweatshirts and would get the kids by for the next month or so, and leave the rest in storage until the weather is colder?

  • Layers?

Maybe just wear summery clothes and have a fleece handy - or some lightweight pants in your clothing rotation now and then break out the cords in November

  • We changed as kids from season to season, but it didn't happen until school started or ended from what I remember. It was more, lets go through the hand me downs. LOL
I think that we always kept a couple things from each season as a carry over. I do not ever remember being allowed to wear shorts to school though, I think I just dated myself a little bit.

Now, I could not imagine the time it takes to transfer each season back and forth. I don't have that kind of time or patience and never did it for either of my daughters either. We would just go through things to see what doesn't fit, but made room for everything all the time.
We always seemed to need some summer clothes to lounge around the house in, or for Gym class or vacation, so it was easier to keep everything in the closet and dresser all year long.
  • we keep seasonal carry-over. we really only have like 1 winter tub and that is coats, hats, gloves and maybe some heavier sweaters. and 1 summer tub- that was swimsuits, shorts, skirts. Everything else stayed in the closet-- No the closet was not large- we just didn't own that many clothes.

I did not grow up with 2 full wardrobes per season--

  • My mom had the bins that she'd label and store each season.  I had 2 younger sisters so this worked well for hand me downs too.

Now I keep everything out year round in our walk-in closet.

  • My seasonal clothes were put into those plastic bins and put into storage when it was time to swap.

  • I don't remember what I did as a kid, but I did have 2 closets in my bedroom so I had plenty of room.  Currently I have a walk-in closet where I keep all of my sweaters year-round.  My dresser is for t-shirts and most of my light-weight clothes.

  • Thanks ladies!  Wow, you helped me realize that while I live fairly simply, I get 99% kid hand me downs, which means I am NOT being intentional about what the kids wear... it's just more than they need (ahem, cough, nestie friend who generously gives me her bargain girl finds!)

So I think tomorrow we'll thin out the drawers.  The closets don't work for the kids so EVERYTHING is squished in four drawers.  But, simple is good and maybe a few fall/winter clothes for the chillier days.

    Thanks ladies =)
