Dear Ladies,
I just returned from my weekend in Quincy to set up our apartment. Three days of hard work and non-stop! I could not even see Boston. My fiance and I are halfway done filling the apartment up with furniture. He sure has a lot to do this month until I go back up in October before the wedding to put the finishing touches before we decorate after the wedding.
Here is where I need assistance. I am on the lookout for the following so I can get use to our new area and also enjoy our new lifestyle. Please recommend places, people, stores, and anything else along with addresses and websites! Thanks a bunch!!
Need to find:
1) A church, great dentist, doctor, and dermatologist for facials
2) Salon for cutting hair, doing nails, and waxing
3) Wine tasting, dance classes, restaurants for Friday nights, bars, frozen yogurt shop, and live music hot spots
4) A favorite place to go and relax the mind
5) Career- I am a math teacher, volleyball coach, and personal tutor. Please let me know of any schools in the area or people I can contact.
6) ANYTHING I forgot!?!?
Thanks ladies!
Re: Need to start finding local shops and creating a new life in Quincy!
Welcome (officially) to the area!
So I don't know the south shore very well but I think there are a couple of ladies on the board who are in that area. Hopefully they can be more helpful. I always recommend the Harvard Vanguard network for doctors, and I've loved everyone I've ever interacted with there.
In terms of volleyball, when I was in high school I know Quincy High actually had a highly respected and competitive program. Not sure what that scene is like today, but might be worth looking into. If you want to find somewhere to play (I think I've mentioned these before), BSSC and BVA run leagues, though I don't know if they have any on the south shore (BSSC is more likely to than BVA). Also, definitely join the Yahoo! Group called bavp; it's a super active community of volleyball players in the area.
Hope some of that helps.
Welcome to the Q! I've lived in Quincy for about 5 years now and it's a great place to live.
Off the top of my head (you will have to google a lot of these):
1. Church - which denomination? We like Wollaston Baptist Church on Wollaston Hill.
Facials - Viviana at Christine's day spa. Great place for massages too.
Dentist - I go to Gentle Dental on Newbury St in Boston
2. IMO best nail place is Sydney Nails on Hancock Street (Opp. Dunks/nr Wollaston T stop)
3. Great bars/restaurants are Kagawa on Hancock Street (for sushi), La Paloma (newport ave ext) for Mexican, Alba (more upscale italian), Gennaro's (more relaxed family style italian). Best chinese food deliver I've found is Lucky Dragon (but always on the lookout for a good one!). Bars I like are Fat Cat and Hancock Tavern. Pinkberry frozen yoghurt just opened in Hingham. I've heard good things about Frozen Freddie's ice cream (think it was named one of the top places in New England). Best bakery is Fratelli's on Quincy ave (behind Verizon shop) and Coffee Break is a good local coffee shop chain. Marina bay is fun when the weather is nice but during the day/early (can get crazy at night). Wine tasting is everyday at a store called BinEnds in Braintree (just off exit 6 on 93 south - by Konditor Meister)
4. To relax, walk along Wollaston beach, esp. the old airport landing by Marina bay (great place to take dogs too).
Hope that helps!
Ladies,
Thank you so much. I am totally on all those recommendations! What about dance or exercise classes? Also I am charismatic and looked at a church called abundant grace, any advice?
Ladies,
Thank you so much. I am totally on all those recommendations! What about dance or exercise classes? Also I am charismatic and looked at a church called abundant grace, any advice? Another thing is I need to go to the cleaners a lot and have a seamstress shorten all new jeans, any affordable but loyal cleaners???
Hi! I just moved out of Quincy a few months ago- while I was living there I use to love 1604 Salon and Spa and used Taylor to get my hair done. She is really good and I actually still drive all the way down there from the north shore. They have reasonable prices also!
For dinner we would do Acapulcos for really fast reliably good mexican, Alba for special occassion, and for fun we ate a few times at the Fat Cat, Fuji1541, and The Fours is really good to go and watch the game. We also loved Captain Fishbones in Marina Bay for special occasion/lobster! Actually all those bars over there are kind of fun to go with a group of friends. I tried out Aria Spa in Marina Bay and it was allright- but not amazing.
I am trying for the life of me to remember my dentist's name he was in Quiny center and they were really good- right next to the Quincy Center T.... I will try to update if I can remember. For relaxing we would often just try to find little parks along the shoreline and hang out/walk there. We really liked it- I hope you guys enjoy it!!

Bars/Restaurants in Quincy: Alba; Marina Bay (Siro's for food; The Chanty for drinks); La Paloma; Great Chow; The Fours; Fat Cat; Fuji
