punk/merin (photography question)

Any good tips/suggestions/tutorial sites for learning to shoot in manual focus? C surprised me with a new lens for my birthday and as I was playing with it I noticed that it didn't seem like my auto-focus was keeping up with it. I consulted Dr. Google and found that it's a common problem if the AF on the camera body isn't "fast" enough, and I wanted to learn manual focus anyway, so now is as good a time as any :)

Re: punk/merin (photography question)

  • I never, ever, ever manual focus. It is too hard to get crisp focus when manually focusing your lens. Especially if you are shooting a child or another moving object... there's no way you can keep up focus.

I don't honestly know too many people who do manual focus their lenses. What kind of camera do you have?

  • I have the Rebel XS and it's a Canon 50mm 1.4 lens. I thought manual focus would be fun to play with, but I would never try it with Charlie :)

    JEALOUS!!! :)

I've played with manual focus a few times.  Mostly when I'm shooting something like flowers or other close-ups.  It's fun to play with, but kind of a PITA, and like PM said, basically impossible to use with a moving target. :)  With a moving target you essentially have to anticipate where it will be when you take the shot and focus there.  I suppose that with a lot of trial and error, it could work, but I'd probably get so frustrated that I'd chuck my camera across the room, lol!!!

I will say, however, that I have a focus lag on my "nifty fifty" as well.  I have NO clue what the technical reason is for it, but I just roll with it.  :)

Here are a couple of websites that may help with some tips and situations though. :)
