high school student shocks his nipples, sues high school

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/nation/7179261.html

as a former teacher, this really annoys me. take responsibility for your own actions, kid. you're in high school - you haven't figured out by now that electrocuting yourself is a bad idea? give me a break.

Re: high school student shocks his nipples, sues high school

  • Sorry, his parents are suing the teacher, the school district AND the entire city. Guess this is everyone's fault. Except the kid's and parents'.

    *spits*

  • Unless there is something they?re not telling us, like the teacher encouraged them to give it a try, then this is absolutely ridiculous. It?s people like this (the parents, the student, and the lawyer) who ruin it for everyone else.  I?m embarrassed someone took this case (but am slightly inclined to want to give them the benefit of the doubt that there is something to this story that doesn?t make this a frivolous lawsuit).

    Edited to hopefully fix formatting.

  • Since it was an electrical trade class, i'm sure there was some sort of electrical safety that was done at the very beginning of the semester.

I feel really bad for the teacher, it says he resigned.  That kid ruined the teacher's job b/c of his stupidity.  I'm pretty sure I learned about electricity when I was about 4 yrs old - obviously they were horseplaying and should be held accountable.

So quetsion then . . . is he also suing the 2 other students b/c they are the ones that did it to him and plugged in the cord???

  • This is insane!  As pp stated, I'm sure they had safety training.  No teacher is going to let the kids go with dangerous equipment without teaching them how to use it.  However, I guess since they never stated, "Be sure never to clamp your nipples" it's the teacher's fault.

  • And parents wonder why there are fewer and fewer high quality teachers in schools... hmmm??  I wonder!

  • Ugh!  I hope he's part of a teacher's union.

All I can think of, is since multiple people are involved, is if they're mad at the teacher because he wasn't paying enough attention or something to put a stop to it.

They don't pay us teachers enough to put up with crap like this.

  • I'm guessing they don't have health insurance or something, and they need to have their medical bills covered. Not that that relieves the kid of his responsibility, but when you're faced with an expensive hospital stay and taking care of your child who now has permanent brain damage I'd imagine you aren't thinking straight and are just trying to figure out how to pay for it all.

And then, of course, there's this:

" According to a suit filed in Strafford County Superior Court, Kelley encouraged Kyle to shock himself, even offering a Mountain Dew in exchange for doing so."

  • Ok, M_and_M's link is exactly what I was thinking had to at least be alleged in order for a lawyer to file suit in this case.  I'm not sure I 100% believe this teacher's quotes, either. He was talking up his fantasy baseball league? The kid said ouch? Somehow I doubt someone being shocked into their heart stopping said ouch.  Now, the kid is still entirely at fault here for being a complete idiot, but I can see where maybe the parents have heard enough stories to think the teacher was negligent.

  • who knows what really happened - yuck. this is why i think cameras in classrooms would be awesome for everyone.

found this quote on boston herald website that shows the choppy video:

"Multiple students told police Kelley was involved in the dare. However, DuBois defended his teacher in recorded interviews with police. He said it was a fellow student who dared him and offered him a soda."

  • And how many of those kids who said the teacher was involved hate him?  You're right, there is no telling what exactly happened. There's definitely a lot to this story.
