I'm a pill popper--only at night.

So every night to fall asleep I have to take one, sometimes two, Advil PM. If I don't take them, I can't sleep. I've tried relaxing techniques and haven't had any luck. Anyone else have this problem? Is this bad to do every night, or is it no big deal? I also have anxiety at night--mainly stress over feeling like there's someone in my room or coming down the stairs. The only time I don't feel freaked out is when I'm in bed with B. (yes B, not T). Sigh...

  • You're not in bed with B tonight??
  • I've suffered from insomnia off and on for years. What works for me right now is taking melatonin. You can get it in the supplement section at the drugstore.

I would suggest thinking about seeing a doctor over this if it's really impacting your sleep. Sleep is so important!

  • Oh, I am a pill popper as well. DH loves to laugh at me about it. I take a zyrtec because it helps to calm down my asthma, then birth control, and then half of a lexapro and at one time I was taking a muscle relaxer as well for my back. FOUR PILLS.

Awhile back I posted about feeling very anxious and having serious problems sleeping.  My counselor recommend me to a psychatrist - and she prescribed me 5mg of Lexapro before I go to bed (5mg is half a pill).  I wake up feeling amazing - not drugged or hungover, just like I got a good night's sleep. I still occassionally lie awake and stew about things at work that are bothering me but it is light years away from what my life used to be like.  I used to wake up in the middle of the night and freaking FREAK OUT about the most unrealistic crap - DH dying in a car accident, one of the cats getting hit by a car - it was not a good way to live not to mention I was constantly a total b!tch because I was so tired. I was totally against taking any sort of anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medication but THANK GOD the girls on here talked me through it. My quality of life has totally improved and I am clearly gushing because my life today is SO MUCH better than my life a year ago! I am well rested!!

  • I would talk to your doctor, lack of sleep is a serious issue.  I think Advil PM has a thing on it about how long you should take it before seeing a doctor.  I am betting you are past that.  ;)

Pink...  Lexapro was heaven sent for me.  It made my life normal and I plan to start back on it after the first of the year.  I never knew a little pill could do do much for someone!

Oh wow, I had no idea you took it as well.  A whole pill made me feel sooooooo listless - I slept the entire Valentine's Day weekend sleeping.  Add a glass of wine to that and...it was not good. But half a pill is enough to keep my mind from acting crazy. I just feel SO GOOD!!!!

We just got a new mattress and that has also helped with my sleep. I am seriously jumping for joy I am so un-tired. I have never been a good sleeper so feeling well rested is SUCH a joy for me.  Woot woot!

  • Me too. I take an ambien every night. I have had horrible insomnia for years and anxiety issues that cause my mind to race at night. Ambien has made life better for me, but I would like to be able to go to sleep "naturally."  I've tried pretty much everything, but I got so frustrated (which in turn caused me more anxiety), so right now that little pill has been the best option. I'm jealous of DH - he can put his head on a pillow and fall right asleep.

You are better than me.  ;)  I started taking 1 pill, then went to 1.5 (2 is what she suggested) and then got back down to 1 once I started talking it out.  I got off all of it before we decided to have babies, it is considered safe for me right now and is very much an option that is on the table even today.

We too got a new bed but that was before my pills...  I was trying everything short of anti-anxiety meds!  If I said how absolute out of it I was you guys would never look at me the same again.

  • I am such a lite sleeper. The tiniest thing keeps me awake. I take Unisom and it helps some times. I don't take it at night if I have drank alcohol like last night. My problem is not falling asleep but staying asleep. DH sometimes has to sleep in the guestroom becuase he snores.

  • If a pill is what it takes to feel normal and get good sleep, do it.  BF takes melatonin and it does him a lot of good.  You should talk to a doctor about the anxiety issue.  Anxiety meds can make a huge difference in your life, as well as the lives of those around you.

2 of my really good friends take Melatonin and love it. I have been thinking about trying it aswell. You may try that Boymom.

  • I would talk to your doctor about possibly getting a prescription for anti-anxiety meds.  I think that taking ibuprofen regularly carries a risk of stomach bleeding, particularly if you drink alcohol on a fairly regular basis.

I don't have anxiety during the day...that's the thing.  I think it's just the new house, different sleep setting than I'm used to.  I'll get better...I didn't have anxiety about break-ins whenever we lived in Moore or when we lived in the rent house here.  I've also never had stairs before.  LOL!

I drink one night a week...usually on the weekends, if that.  So no worries about the stomach bleeding.  (With the exception of GTGs!)

I think I'll try the melatonin.  If that doesn't work, I'll probably switch to Excedrin PM or Tylenol PM!

If the melatonin doesn't work look for something called Simply Sleep. It's the "PM" part of Tylenol PM. That way you aren't killing your stomach/liver from the extra advil or Tylenol.
  • I got into a similar habit late last year. I think I took some PM medicine and benadryl several times. I just worked through it and the sleep issues eventually passed. It flaired up again recently but I resisted the urge to take something. I am one of those people who usually don't like taking things, but I know how horrible it is to not be able to sleep.

Here is some info on melatonin. I had heard of people having the crazy nightmares while taking it.

    Good luck!
