Roomba for Hardwood Floors/Pet Hair

Do you have a Roomba and if so how do you like it?  I am thinking about purchasing one, as our home has hardwood floors and I am constantly having to sweep pet hair.  I thought this could be a good solution for in between cleanings.  WDYT?

Re: Roomba for Hardwood Floors/Pet Hair

  • We had a roomba for a few years and actually just sold it on craigslist beause it doesn't (IMO) work well with pet hair. We have three cats and I felt like the roomba couldn't really grab the pet hair off the hardwood floors (it did a so so job on carpets but i wasn't even happy with that). IMO, don't waste your money. What are you currently using right now?

  • I have a Roomba but personally I find it easier and quicker to sweep. It takes forever to finish a room because it makes several passes, and it's LOUD on hard surfaces. I hardly ever use it anymore; it's so loud that I don't like to be around when it's going, but I also don't want to leave my cat alone with it.

That being said, I find that mine does a pretty good job with pet hair.

It's a great tool but I'm not sure that it'll really so useful for your specific reason.

I forgot to add that it is really noisy, especially on hardwood floors!

  • We have laminate flooring on our first floor.  I found that after every 2 or 3 days, it would look absolutely awful, with dirt, dust, crumbs, hair, etc.  With the Roomba, it runs three times a week while we're at work, and other than having to look for it from time to time, it does a pretty good job.  It doesn't do terribly well along walls, and it is loud enough to wake me up.  However, it takes me MUCH less time to clean out the Roomba than it does for me to sweep the entire 1st floor.

We have one of the newer models, so that might have something to do with why we like it.  And, with regard to the carpets, I just can't get over how  much DUST it collects.

It seriously helps to have a manicure set for the Roomba, though, because you need to clean the hair off the brushes, and it's MUCH easier to cut the hairs when they're wrapped around the hard plastic of the rollers.  Takes me less than 5 minutes to clean out the dirt/dust, and a lot more than that to sweep (especially under the couch/coffee table.)

Thanks for the advice!  Right now I am just using a good old fashioned broom, and after that I go over the wood floors again with my Swifer Vac just to get anything that I missed, and then I finally use my wood floor cleaner.

Hmmm, that is no good that it's loud! Sad  Maybe I will have to just keep using my broom and that's it...but one of the things that I thought might be nice is the fact that it can clean under beds because we have hardwoods in our bedrooms as well.  I am not very good at cleaning underneath the beds on a regular basis, but when I do I always find HUGE dust bunnies so I thought it would help to cut down on that?

This.  Exactly.  Roomba isn't perfect, but we have 2 cats and a dog (and subsequently, a TON of pet hair).  We let Ruby (our Roomba's name) run while we're at work and our house looks WAY better now than it did pre-Roomba....and we don't have to do nearly as much to keep up with it!
