DH has orientation for med school today! I'm so happy for him. I can't believe the time has finally come! He did a post-bach, so had to do 3 more years of school after already having a BS. Now another long haul but it'll all be worth it.
He's been nervous (and jokingly asked me to come with him today
but I'm sure his jitters will go away once he meets his classmates.
I also was in touch with the school's medical insurer today. If I go on DH's plan (which I most likely will) I'm covered for pregnancy when the time comes. The plan is $60/mo more than my current, but our car insurance just went down so I'm saving about the same amount from that. Now I just need to find a job!
Re: Yay DH!
Thats great! I'm covered for pregnancy under HH's plan also, he has really good insurance where he works. I'm hoping he's still there when the time comes for us to have a baby so we won't have to worry about all the expenses.
^^^ that made me laugh (since he's not a gold)! I tried to get him to hybrid our names :P
Exactly! Aww.
I feel like such a moron... health insurance /= coverage for pregnancy? This had never occurred to me. A bright one, I am.
Matt's insurance is generally fantastic, so I'm guessing that it will cover me even if I get knocked up. But that's something to check before we start having serious baby conversations. Argh.
Woohoo! I checked my policy and I'm 100% covered for maternity stuff.... Random, but I also found out I'm covered for organ transplants, too. Unfortunately though, if I ever go the way of Tiger Woods, I'm NOT covered for sex therapy treatment, so I'd be on my own!
haha!
Jehawley, I can't imagine how expensive it is to have a baby without insurance. The last car accident we were in, my medical bills (before insurance paid it) were $3000, and that wasn't for anything major, so I'm pretty sure that maternity care would be outrageous.
I think its ridiculous how much it costs to have a baby these days! If it weren't for the pain meds they can give you I would just have mine at home.
Whaaaaaaaat??? If it cost us $9000 just to give BIRTH to a baby, there is no way we'd ever have one. And who the hell has $25,000 to spend on that?? How are all of these 16 year olds paying for that??
Thank god for free healthcare.
Haha that's just without insurance, with insurance you might not pay anything, or just a few hundred bucks. You have to pay for the room at the hospital, all the doctors and nurses, the anesthesiologist... all kinds of stuff. It's ridiculous! Sometimes they give discounts to people without insurance, but I would guess that people without insurance just have a lot of medical bill debt after something like that.
I would need to upgrade my current insurance to be covered. When I got it (when I moved to the US 2 yrs ago) they also told me I couldn't get coverage for maternity until after a year of being covered by them. My dad told me I should wear a chastity belt.
jehawley - I've thought about fleeing back to Canada to have our unconceived child. "I'm just visiting my parents..." *pop*
I miss free healthcare.
goldgold, I would tots do that if I were you!
We are looking into moving to Boston, but I think we're going to have to wait until after any and all future children are born, haha
Those numbers are pretty accurate I think. Me for the twins I only paid $100 bucks thanks to the Navy. The Navy paid $175,000 they didn't pay right away so the bills kept coming to me. We had lots of complications before they were born I was in the hospital for a month before they were born and they were in the hospital about a month after they were born. They were fine but their birthday is Oct 30 and it was supposed to be Dec 22nd.
And if we had free health care much of that would've been prevented since people wouldn't get as sick or be using the ER as their family doctor. Awesome.
I believe this is true but I also believe that it our health care system charges way to much for most things. Which makes it impossible for people that need to go to a doctor to go. So they don't go until they have no choice but go to the ER. I do like that they have small clinics in some of the walgreens n stuff now so that it makes it more available to the masses.
The insurance companies are to blame for this.
I didn't know there was clinics in some Walgreens. That's good!!
Oh I realize this and frivilous lawsuits as well. Don't get me wrong some are legit but I think people in the country will sue over any and everything.
They started the clinics in some of the walgreens and I think riteaids here in town. I know several people that have been quite pleased with them. Much quicker then a dr and you are already there to get your meds. I think they have a nurse practitioner there and she will direct you to a low cost dr if its more serious.
Medicaid, I would imagine. That's what MIL is on. And WIC covers a lot if you have kids.
I grew up in an area that had a LOT of people who abused the government aid systems, so I'm pretty jaded about it. I know that there are good, honest, hardworking people who really do need the safety net, but I've seen too many of the other kind. The blatant abuse of government assistance programs... well, I just deleted a couple of paragraphs about it.
It's the same for all the illegal immigrants who have their babies here. The hospitals can't turn them away so we end up paying for them. And a friend of mine moved to Canada, got KU by her affair man up there, lives with him, and went to Buffalo to have her baby and then went back to Canada to live with him. I know she doesn't have insurance either. Sorry, I'm super judgy when it comes to healthcare. :-/

I tried to go to the Minute Clinic at CVS after my cat bit me, and found out my insurance won't pay for me to go there, I *have* to go to an urgent care or my primary care.

Why did your friend come back to the US to give birth? Did she have status in Canada?
I doubt she had (or even has) status in Canada (I'm assuming maybe it means citizenship?). She met this dude playing an online video game, went there to live with him before she was officially separated from her husband and actually had the baby before her divorce was final. I *think* she had COBRA insurance, which is why she had to come back to the US. She did all her prenatal care in Buffalo too, since she's a US citizen. That situation was so weird...do all that even make sense? I don't really know how Canadian healthcare really works with the free part.
