Yesterday I was at the SS office changing my name, which I had planned to hyphenate, and use his last name in most settings other than on checks and legal documents.
The receptionist convinced me to use both last names, without a hyphen, something about security reasons but I couldn't really understand her accent. She said it would be the same as hyphenating.
Now I'm having second thoughts, trying to read about people who have done this and what problems they've run into. I'm most worried about people not knowing what last name to use for me, and about being found in computer systems where they've used one last name or the other... Now I am starting to wish I had just taken his last name and not have to go through all of this.
Re: I want to re-change my name :(
did you change it everywhere else yet? maybe you can go back to SS today and re-change it to hypenated. how is your name now...? is your maiden name more like your middle name now?

RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me.
You made my wedding day complete.
What name did you select to change to when you filled out your marriage license? What does your marriage certificate say?
In California, SS and DMV records must match up exactly with what you registered with the state. I'd go by whatever name you elected to use on your marriage license.
Go back to the SS office, speak to a manager, tell them the clerk confused you, and after thinking/discussing it, you'd like to go back to the name you went in wanting to go by in the first place. They should be able to help you.
