Okay, DH and I have been debating for a while now on whether or not we should "upgrade" to a king size bed and put our current bedroom set in our guest room. I think we finally decided that this is the route we're going to take but of course now we need a new comforter/duvet in a king!
This is our current bedding:

We have the decorative pillows and all. Ideally, I'd love to get the same duvet but in a king (and what do you know, Macy's is having their Labor Day sale this weekend and it would be on sale 60% off and I have an additional 10% off!). DH doesn't think that it would go well with the new bedroom set we're thinking of buying for the master bedroom.
Here is the new set we're thinking of:

DH doesn't think the dark gray would look good with the shiny metal. The wood on the top of the foot board and the nightables/dresser/chest is almost the same color as our current bedroom set is so I'm not too worried about that matching. Also, our walls are currently "eggshell" (we're planning on painting them as soon as the stupid painter comes and fixes all the settlement cracks) so it wouldn't compete with wall color- yet.
I know that I could buy it this weekend and always return it if it doesn't look good, but I'm afraid if I returned it after the sale I wouldn't get such a great discount on the next comforter/duvet I tried. So what do you all think? Do you think that our current bedding will look decent with the new bedroom set? If not, help me shop! We have a very contemporary style!

That's what I said! Our ceiling fan is the dark wood (that would match everything) and chrome... and he thinks that looks good. But for some reason doesn't think the dark gray would look good with the shiny metal. And everything else I like at Macy's (that is light gray/silver) is being discontinued so you can't get the full ensemble.
I just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy for thinking it would still look good. Maybe I'll just remind him how much money we've already put into the bedding and it'll change his mind
[if you can't already tell, I LOVE this bedding!]
I'm going to go with YH. The grays will be very close in proximity and could be a little too much. Also, would you want both rooms to look the same? or have little distinction between the master and the guest room?
I'm big on contrast. Our bedroom has three tan-ish walls with one in a golden yellow. Our sheets are chocolate brown, blankets/with duvet are chocolate brown with our comforter being creamy tan and chocolate brown with tropical patterns. The headboard is a padded large rounded top-square sides item with the fabric being creamy white with brown flecks.
ps- getting an eastern king bed was one of the best investments we've ever made. Those extra inches are sooooo worth it. Out here on the west coast, it's harder to find sheets, but it's amazing.
The guest room wouldn't have the same comforter/duvet. We'd use another queen cover (that is blue) for that bedroom and the queen duvet on our current bed would be used as a spare [in case anything happens to the king, we need to wash it and it doesn't dry in time, etc]
As for contrast, we have white as our contrasting color. Our curtains are white and we pull the sheets over the cover so it breaks up the constant gray. But I wouldn't really be able to help with the gray and silver of the foot board touching each other.
Still no?
I'm still on the not really side of the fence, but it could be ok. If I were standing in your shoes, I'd go see if there was something that would coordinate well with the rest of your existing bedding set so that you could keep parts of the set you love. If so, I'd consider that.
If not, go with the set you know you LOVE and if it doesn't work you can always return it. Macy's has sales frequently and if new styles are coming out that could help persuade you to a different style if this one doesn't work out.
I bought our Tommy Bahama set from Overstock and LOVE it. It's now on clearance in a few places and harder to find, but when I bought it almost two years ago it was current-season and half the cost I would have paid at BBB. I LOVE it and understand why you love the set you have.

I think I'll probably just end up getting it and if it doesn't look good when our furniture arrives, return it and wait until the Columbus Day/Thanksgiving sales. I feel like the Hotel Collection (the brand it is) is starting to turn over their inventory as a lot of the other styles are at 'closeout' prices.
Also, I think part of DH's hesitation is that he's not in love with the comforter. Not style or anything but for the longest time we didn't know there were strings inside the duvet to tie onto the comforter (so it kept falling down to the bottom) and he constantly gets into bed with rough heels so it pulls at the duvet cover! I had told him before we knew that we were going to "upgrade" that if the duvet ever went on a major sale again or it looked like it was going to be discontinued, I was going to stock-pile them in our house (I've loved this style since we first put it on our registry... over two years ago!).
I need help. Haha
<---- needs help too. I stock pile things when they are on sale/super sale and in the beginning H thought I was nuts. Now that I am budgeting our money more conservatively than he did as a bachelor, he's realizing that I'm not so crazy. He also likes that we are feeding both of us for less money than he spent on just himself.
