I just received an email back from a job I applied to through Craigslist. The company is asking for me to do a free credit report and send them the confirmation number. Besides this raising some red flags (DH says some companies are doing this now), the website for the supposed "design firm" does not work. There is also no telephone number. The email address matches the website for this firm. The posting for the job said "We are opening up a smaller office" so do I assume they have no website yet?
Please tell me what you would do in this position! I really need a job, but also don't want my identity stolen or anything crappy like that!
TIA!
Re: WWYD? Response to application
It sounds like there are too many red flags there. Does the firm's main website have a general number? I would call to verify. Otherwise, skip it.
Also, I would think if a company needs to do a credit check before hiring you, they would do that after an interview.
No phone number, and no hits on Google. Should I even respond to the email? Ack! I hate this process.
I wouldn't do it. Usually companies do there own credit and background checks during the interview and hiring process. Including someone would contact you with information about the company and some way to set up an interview. There are legit jobs on Craiglists but there are a lot of scams out there too.
You could respond to email without your credit information and request for more information about the company like numbers, contacts, and where they are located.
It's a scam. The people who sent you the email have access to the information you give to the "online credit check". They then use your address, SSN, DOB, etc to steal your identity.

You should report them to craigs list.
I've got more issues than a magazine
Sounds kinda sketchy. Even if they are a legitmate firm, they should have their website up and running and a wokring phone number.
Be careful that it isn't someone trying to run a scam for identity theft or something like that. Go with your gut instinct.
