WWYD?! Job App.

I just received an email back from a job I applied to through Craigslist. The company is asking for me to do a free credit report and send them the confirmation number. Besides this raising some red flags (DH says some companies are doing this now), the website for the supposed "design firm" does not work. There is also no telephone number. The email address matches the website for this firm. The posting for the job said "We are opening up a smaller office" so do I assume they have no website yet?

Please tell me what you would do in this position! I really need a job, but also don't want my identity stolen or anything crappy like that!

Re: WWYD?! Job App.

  • I wouldn't do it...it seems shady to me that there is no way for you to contact someone except by email.  I wouldn't be giving out any personal info until I was able to meet someone in person.

  • Should I respond and say something to the effect of: I don't feel comfortable giving out my information without having spoken or met with you. Would you be able to give me a phone number or meet with me?

    (I'll write it much nicer)

  • I agree - I wouldnt give them any of the information they are requesting. while some companies do do credit searches on potential employees, they would never ask you to do the credit report.

I would reply back saying "thank you so much for your interest but I dont feel comfortable giving out my information this early in the screening process" or something like that. Sounds like a scam to me for sure.

  • Say you'd be happy to share that information during a face to face interview.

  • Ok, I sent a response. We'll see what happens.... maybe I'll be asked to call them in Nigeria next.
  • Umm, it's one thing for a company to run a credit report on you, but it's completely another for them to expect you to do it and then hand over all of your information to them. I think you're absolutely right to be cautious-- there are a bunch of red flags here!
  • Yeah... even though you've already responded, I would still be doing some digging.  If they're legit, there has to be some info about them out there SOMEWHERE on the interwebs.

Get all Nancy Drew on their a$$e$!

Asking you to order your OWN credit report and hand it over to them.... that's just strange.

  • yeaaaah... i wouldn't hand over that kind of info until a job interview!
  • def seems fishy to me. I wouldn't hand over any information like that.  Craigslist is great but you have to be careful, my brother thought he found this great apartment and it turned out to be a Nigerian scam.  Good thing my mom thought to do some research on the internet.
  • I am sooo Nancy Drew! I tried digging and didn't find anything. They could be an offshoot of another company and there's no info out yet, but who knows. We'll see if the respond. I did have an AMAZING Nigerian scam email from another job I applied to...

  • Definitely a little weird.  I just got a second job at a major hospital in the area and they sent me a huge packet, which included the credit report they ran on me!  Based on that, it seems the company should be doing it.

  • I think you made the right choice in not giving away your personal info... craigslist can be super sketchy! When we were trying to get rid of our apartment we had a couple people try to scam us.

Sadly, not everyone on the internet is as wonderful as we are!

  • I've definitely had my share of people TRYING to pull one over on me. Luckily I'm smarter than that. I'm definitely not expecting to hear back from this email.
  • I agree with everyone else in that you did the right thing by not handing over your info.  I mean, my company had to do a credit check on me in order for me to get my security clearance, but that was after I had been interviewed and offered the job depending on how the background check turned out.  Craigslist is definitely sketchy sometimes!
