WWYD?! Job App.
I just received an email back from a job I applied to through Craigslist. The company is asking for me to do a free credit report and send them the confirmation number. Besides this raising some red flags (DH says some companies are doing this now), the website for the supposed "design firm" does not work. There is also no telephone number. The email address matches the website for this firm. The posting for the job said "We are opening up a smaller office" so do I assume they have no website yet?
Please tell me what you would do in this position! I really need a job, but also don't want my identity stolen or anything crappy like that!

Should I respond and say something to the effect of: I don't feel comfortable giving out my information without having spoken or met with you. Would you be able to give me a phone number or meet with me?

I agree - I wouldnt give them any of the information they are requesting. while some companies do do credit searches on potential employees, they would never ask you to do the credit report.
I would reply back saying "thank you so much for your interest but I dont feel comfortable giving out my information this early in the screening process" or something like that. Sounds like a scam to me for sure.
Yeah... even though you've already responded, I would still be doing some digging. If they're legit, there has to be some info about them out there SOMEWHERE on the interwebs.

I am sooo Nancy Drew! I tried digging and didn't find anything. They could be an offshoot of another company and there's no info out yet, but who knows. We'll see if the respond. I did have an AMAZING Nigerian scam email from another job I applied to...

I think you made the right choice in not giving away your personal info... craigslist can be super sketchy! When we were trying to get rid of our apartment we had a couple people try to scam us.
Sadly, not everyone on the internet is as wonderful as we are!
