The Rabbit test

Do you girls know how they used to do pregnancy tests?!?!  I had never heard of the rabbit test until today, I am shocked.  If you don't know, here is the wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_Test

Basically, they would inject your urine into an immature rabbit, wait a few days, kill the rabbit, then look it see if it was ovulating (because of a hormone in the pregnant woman, the same hormone they look for today on the sticks you pee on).  They must have gone through so many rabbits, geez!  Anyone else a little shocked/horrified/bewildered?  Or am I just that naiive :P
