Anyone ever have a bad experience with hotwire?

DH and I are planning a fall trip to the South.  I was looking for a little nicer hotel for our anniversary weekend, but Charleston is expensive in the fall.  I've never used Hotwire.com, but it came up in a search.

Anyone ever have a bad experience with them?  Like it wasn't what you expected or something?

  • I am a big fan of hotwire.  Used it numerous times to rent cars and have only booked a hotel once.  I was able to get Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas for $74/night over Memorial Day weekend in 2009- which was a phenomenal deal. Use www.betterbidding.com to try and identify your hotel before you book.  This worked for us with Vegas.

Only bad experience I've had with them was an accident on DH's part.  I booked a week long rental car in Puerto Rico in January for $150- great deal.  DH was the only driver allowed per hotwire.  He lost his driver's licence at MSP after we went through security.  We get to the rental car company in PR and they refused to let me be the driver of the car instead of him.  Called hotwire to transfer the reservation to my name and they refused.  They were nice enough to refund us the $150 though, which was more than they had to do according to their purchase agreement.  We ended up paying $250 directly to the rental car company rather than the $150 to hotwire.

  • I love Hotwire!  Used it throughout my CA honeymoon along with Expedia.

Hotwire lets you select the AREA within your city so be positive on the map and make sure you don't get in an area you don't want.  I also pay close attention to stars - get at least a 3 star, 4 star is better.  You can use Expedia to see if you can figure out the hotels that generally are "online".

The downsides to hotwire: zero control once you book.  If you didn't pay attention and got double beds, too bad so sad.  You've also pre-paid so there is no emergency that will let you call and cancel (I don't believe, anyway...)

And SUPER jealous.  Charleston is on my short list of cities I want to visit when money and free time magically appear in my life.  :-)

  • The only issue we have had with hotwire is getting preferences once you get to the hotel.

There were certain amenities listed as available at the hotel we chose, that  weren't actually at the hotel.

The hotel basically said, "that is hotwire's problem, not ours.  Complain to them." and they would do nothing to help/work with us.  Hotwire was no help either.  We couldn't afford to pay for two hotels for the week, but definitely weren't happy with the hotel we ended up with.
