I'm currently sorting through resumes for a new position on my team and laughing hysterically at some of them. Here are my favs.
- People applying for the job with zero qualifying experience and actually stating in their cover letter that they're looking for something in an entirely different field.
- The email address "future_educ8tor."
- Listing both elementary school and high school under Education.
- The exact sentence - "I believe I'm worth $50,000."
These things equally amuse and horrify me. Are applications like this normal?
Re: Funny things on resumes
"People applying for the job with zero qualifying experience and actually stating in their cover letter that they're looking for something in an entirely different field."
I have a question about this... I am trying to switch careers from Int'l Business to work in a school setting, I have zero qualifying experience, does this mean I have zero chance of even being considered?
I see a fair number of resumes with little-to-no qualifying experience. I hate to say it, but I think the economy is crummy enough that people are applying for any job opening, regardless of experience level.
My favorite thing is the cover letter that talks about my school "district" when every job opening I post describes my school as a private, independent school. This is a sign of people not paying attention or not rewriting their cover letter each time they apply for a job.
I'm a career changer - from business to teaching. I did a skills-based resume that highlighted the teaching/training experience I had with adults. When I applied to teaching jobs, I had a teaching license because I passed all of the tests. I think that's what got me in the door. I wasn't just trying to do something new, I went out and got the license, showed how my skills would be appropriate, etc.
Ugh! I used to see things like this all the time when I was hiring, too. Now that I'm teaching business classes at the high school level, an appropriate email address is one of the requirements when we do resumes. Seriously, how easy is it to set up a free email with something professional?
I guess that depends on what type of job in a school setting. You certainly couldn't be a teacher without credentials, but I'm guessing your skill set from Int'l Business to something Admnistrative might match. Depends.
This is really a problem for us because obviously people are applying for anything and everything. We need someone with a very specific set of skills, but we're getting applications from people who are really just wasting our time. It's kind of frustrating. Funny, but frustrating.
LOL! I see this everyday...literally! I work in HR and I can tell you how many ridiculous things I've seen on apps and resumes. And they wonder why they can't get a job! I recommend for everyone to read a how-to-write-a resume book before job hunting. They make such fools out of themselves putting all types of irrevelant, unprofessional things on their resumes.

That is my fave. So does that mean you're not worth any more than that?
One of the recent cover letters I saw started with "I hereby apply for the position of Web Editor." How official.
Also, for this editor position, I received a letter that stated:
"When searching job online it mentioned Job Title Web Communications Editor that caught my attention. I was working for ____ in ______. I would like to change environment."
Great editing skills, buddy.
