Is anyone an archivist?
If so, is that the career you started out in? Were you a history major?
It's a career that has always interested me and I just wonder how some got started in the field. TIA!
Re: Archivists
There are two main ways to become qualified as an archivist, depending on which sort of program you apply for. One is going through a Master's of Library/Information Science, the other is going through a Master's of History program in something like Public History. I went through a MLIS program, with a concentration in archives. My undergrad degree is in English and history. Since the places of employment for archivists are pretty similar to those of librarians (libraries, historical societies, larger corporations, the fed. government), let me tell you the job market is a little bleak.
I've been unemployed for 6 months now, though that is mainly due to having to relocate because of my husband's job. But, where I was working is laying people off currently and in the last 6 months, there have only been a handful of jobs that I've applied for.
Long story short, it's something I enjoy doing, but if you aren't interested in moving, make very sure that there will be job opportunities where you are. It's not a particularly high paying job, so going into massive debt over education isn't a smart idea. Check out the Society of American Archivists at archivists.org for info on finding an accredited program as well as job availability. You can also browse usajobs for federal positions.
Thanks for the information/suggestions. I hope you find something in your new location soon.
