Job Offer Out of the Country

Ahhh. Life's little twists and turns. My husband was offered a prestigious position in Quebec City, Canada. Right now, we live in Seattle and have for the past 5 years. I'm a copywriter. We have no kids and have been renting.

He's been contracting from home for about a year now and feels slightly stagnant in his career.

I told him to accept the position. I thought about it and thought how I've always regretted not living abroad - it's my one big regret. I also will be learning French fulltime and working on my creative writing. I'll miss people here but will actually be closer to my family in Chicago.

Would you take a BIG job offer if it were out of the country? Would you move out of the country for your husband's dream job?

Re: Job Offer Out of the Country

  • Yes, I would. It's not like it's REALLY abroad, like in Australia or something. Like you said, you'll be closer to Chicago anyway.

I think I'd always regret not taking this opportunity. It sounds like there's no reason not to!

  • It depends on the country, but generally yes. DH and I dream of him finding a job in Ireland for a few years.

  • Yes!  I would go almost anywhere.  I keep hinting to H to look for work in Dubai - so far, he's not biting.

I hope you have an amazing experience! :)

Don't worry, I'm working on it.
    Get it on!
  • I think I would, if my hubby were okay with moving and if it weren't anyplace off the continent.  I'd be fine with going to Canada - I'm close enough to it, anyway!  If my hubby got a job out of the country, I'd be fine with it, especially if it were his dream job.
  • I would totally go, but this is from someone who has lived in Canada and now works in Israel.  There are a whole group of Nesties who might be better able to help address some of your concerns on the International Nesties board.

Most of us has moved abroad for work or love and are a great resource if you'd like to find out some more info about what you need to do to prepare to move, questions you should ask about the new job, concerns regarding renting, health insurance, battling bureaucracy, etc.

I'd take the job in a heartbeat.  Quebec is great and it's a wonderful experience.  Good luck!

  • I moved to China and Norway for my job, so yes!

And over the years, I've met plenty of men and women who've moved for their spouse's job.  Our company even has a special social organization for them.

I'll echo Little_One and suggest you check out the Int'l board if you haven't already!  It's a great resource, and if you do decide to pursue the opportunity, you'll be able to get lots of great advice about int'l benefits packages, moving, etc.

  • What an incredible opportunity for you guys! Kudos for being willing to move for a new experience. If the job was good, and the area was cool, we would definitely be open to an international opportunity.

We visited Quebec City this spring, and it's absolutely incredible. It's so beautiful! You'll definitely need to learn French, but the whole time we were there we were saying how cool it would be to live there someday.

Congratulations and best wishes on your upcoming adventure!
