What teaching position to choose?

What do you think?

I wanted to teach a small only special ed. class that we've had in the school for awhile. I would be teaching by myself as I had trouble with an unmotivated teaching partner last year. However, my principal wasn't able to give me the class, even though he liked the idea. So, he put me with a former teaching partner in the same grade. I was happy with that.

When I went in to set up my classroom today, my principal put me with a different teaching partner. She's great, but will be leaving on maternity leave in November and not returning until next school year. So, there will be a substitute. The substitute could be great, ok or horrible. He said he'd try to find a good sub, but may be forced to take a teacher from the district, which usually is not good. This classroom is already set up.

Or... there will be a multi-grade small special ed. class coming probably he'll know on Friday. I wouldn't have any materials or a classroom right away. I would be teaching by myself, but we don't know the kids. They could be really hard-- throwing chairs, biting, running. This would be hard to do as I want to get pregnant soon.

So, any thoughts?

Re: What teaching position to choose?

  • Are you tenured?

If not, I say stay in this current position otherwise it might look like you have difficulty working with others. Please don't think thats what I think, I'm a teacher too and certainly understand!

If you are tenured, I may go for this new job opening if you are looking for some variety over your current situation:)

  • i would also stay in your current position, once you get pregnant you won't want to be getting stressed out, and i am thinking that even if you don't get a really good sub, your current position will probably be less stress than the special ed class.  i'm not a teacher though so i could be wrong, but that is my read on the situation!

This is what I was going to say!  When you are pregnant, especially if you are dealing with morning sickness in the beginning, you will be thankful for the other person, even if they aren't exactly the best.

  • I think I'm staying where I am. There's a better chance of getting a good substitute and we don't know how all these special ed. kids will be. Some of them will probably be misplaced and hitting, running, pushing, throwing, ect. I would be up for the challenge now, but if we get pregnant I would have a huge problem with falling or hit. A teacher was pregnant a few years ago and a student went to punch her in the stomach, but she turned around and got hit in the back.

    THanks ladies.
