Did you ever watch The Road? What did you think of it? I still haven't talked myself into watching it, in case it totally ruins the book for me...
Re: ***mrsdarling***
Oh shoot, I completely forgot to follow up with you! I actually liked it a lot more than I thought (was afraid) I would. Viggo M was fantastic, as expected, and there was a lot less of Charlize than the preview led me to believe. I know studios cut trailers that way to get people in the seats, but I was really afraid they'd changed the story drastically.
I last read it years ago, but from what I recall, the movie was very true to the book. Unfortunately, the book doesn't really lend itself to being filmed. The pace is slow, the environment is dreary, and much of the power of the story comes from what the character is feeling internally. They use narration to cover some of it, which isn't very effective. But realistically, what else could they do?
If I hadn't read the book, I don't think I would have enjoyed the movie at all. J hasn't read it, and when it was over he said "that was the longest 2-hour movie ever made." I didn't feel that way because I 'knew' the characters and had a better understanding of what they were going through. That made me care about what was happening to them, when the movie on its own wouldn't have achieved that.
Wow, that is long! Bottom line: I'm glad I watched it and would recommend it to you... but I wouldn't suggest it to someone who hadn't read the book.
No, they didn't change the ending. I only noticed one thing that was different, and it was pretty minor. When I say it doesn't lend itself to being filmed, I mean it's not a book that's full of action and exitement. They walk, they meet someone. They walk, they find something. That doesn't necessarily make for a blockbuster film, so I was glad they didn't change a lot of stuff to make it more Hollywood, like you said.
Seriously, I would suggest watching it. I don't think it will ruin your opinion of the book. It's not at ALL like the Harry Potter movies, where they change it and leave so much out it's practically unrecognizable. But I love HP so much, I watch the movies anyway.
*whispers* I only read the first 2 (or 3?) HP books, so I really like the movies and don't know what I'm missing. You may shun me now.
OK, I think you've talked me into it...I'll watch it this weekend when Ben gets home so I have a shoulder to cry onto lol!
Omigosh, now I'm so nervous! What if you don't like it? It'll be all my fault for talking you into watching!
No shunning from me! But, uh, just in case you ever want to reconsider... Book 4 is where it REALLY starts to get good!
LOL I'll be sitting silently on the couch after it ends, and then suddenly scream out, "That was crap! CURSE YOU, MRSDARLING!"
OMG YOU'RE A HORRIBLE PERSON!
