POLL: What do your parents do?

Both of my parents worked for IBM for a long time, in manufacturing.  My Mom still works there (it's a different company now).

My Dad got laid off about a year and a half ago.  He had already been working PT at Walmart (in addition to his manufacturing job).  He was able to become FT there.

It sucks how hard my parents work for nothing.

  • My mom is an oncology RN, and she works part time at Ellis Hospital. My dad works for Verizon and has for his entire career. He is looking to retire at some point this year.

  • My mom was a third grade teacher. My dad worked at just about every factory in Syracuse until he was laid off when I was in middle school. He got into bus driving, starting with school buses and now drives for a tour company. I wouldn't think he makes much, but he made out like a bandit when my mom died. He moved back into our house mortgage free and got all my social security checks. Wow, aren't I bitter tonight?

  • My parents were both teachers.  They retired a couple of years ago.  Now my mom is a Weight Watchers leader.  My dad has perfected retirement, and mostly reads and fiddles with hobbies.  I want my dad's life!  :)
  • My dad's an elementary teacher, and my mom works 1 on 1 with a young woman with disabilities.

  • My dad was a phone repair man his whole life. We had a really long driveway, so he'd let me "drive" his truck down to the end of the driveway when he'd come home for lunch.

My mom was a secretary and then a stay at home mom.

I have no idea how they raised 6 children and got us all through college. Amazing.

My Mom was an executive assistant to the DA in Tx but she died in 2007- so now I like to think of her at the spa all day

  • When they were married, they owned a business.  After the divorce, my dad sold the business and is now "retired", but works for the business that bought him out because he likes to work.

Mom works for the Center for the Disabled in medical records.  This was her first full time job she has ever had in her life.

  • My Dad is a Pharmacist at Mercy Hospital, and he teaches Anatomy & Physiology courses at Canisius College as an adjunct professor.

My Mom was a Microbiologist that worked in a lab at Children's, then became a SAHM after she had my brother.  Now she works a few days a week at the local library.

  • My mom taught elementary school for 32 years.  She retired a few years ago, and now works part time as an admin assit. for our local Legal Aid Society.  She absolutely loves it.

My dad has had a variety of careers over his lifetime; he has a masters in anthropology and did work in that field for a few years.  He spent most of my lifetime working as a carpenter/woodworker for other businesses as well as his own.  He would go to senior living homes and nursing homes and do projects with the elderly patients there.  Currently though he is a vocational education teacher at the local juvenile detention facility.  He teaches both carpentry and retail customer service to the young men in the facility in hopes they will be able to use the skills when they are released.

  • My dad is a "retired" Episcopal priest.  He still says mass at a local convent once a week and is the part time priest at a church.

My mom was a 4th grade teacher until my eldest brother was born and then was a SAHM until I started first grade.  Once I was in school full time (I'm the youngest) she started subbing.  Since she was actually certified to teach she was at the top of the sub list and worked several days a week and some long-term subbing. After we moved 12 years later, she went back to being a SAHM.
