ESL/ELL Teachers

I am interviewing for a position in an ELL classroom at what just may be my dream school in my dream district. The problem? I have only had one teaching interview in my life and it was a screening interview. What kinds of questions should I anticipate beyond the usual general education classrooms?

Re: ESL/ELL Teachers

  • What grade level?

I teach a biology couse to ELD students, but I didn't interview for that position at the time so I'm sort of just assuming what you might need to know. I am also answering as if you are applying for a high school course.

I would imagine that you would want to be familiar with different strategies for teaching vocabulary. My district loves Kate Kinsella. I personally don't use her vocab stuff, but I do use her sentence starters to help my students answer questions in complete sentences. I sort of follow Robert Marzano's strategies when teaching vocabulary in my class.

I would be familiar with the different levels of ELL. In my district, they are broken up so that we have ELD 1-2, ELD 3-4 and then a transitional class. I teach ELD 3-4, which means they can only read at a high elementary or low middle school level. When they start reading at an 8th grade level, they are usually mainstreamed.

I actually have to run because we have a parent night tonight. If this is the kind of information you are looking for, I would be happy to brainstorm more this evening and I can get back to you.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you! That's really helpful.

I would be teaching at the elementary level. I will definitely be researching district ELL levels tonight.

  • I am a bilingual/ESL teacher for primary grade students.

In addition to vocabulary strategies, I would be prepared to talk about how you would design a lesson or unit especially for students who are ELL.  I would incorporate things like sheltered instruction, leveled questioning, and language objectives in addition to your content objectives in your answer.  A lot of what a classroom teacher who has a lot of ELL students in her classroom needs to do is about differentiation and simultaneously addressing content AND language.

It might also be helpful to prepare to answer some hypothetical scenario questions, like: how would you support a student who has just moved from another country and speaks little English?  How will you create strong relationships with parents who speak little English?  etc.

Good luck!  Teaching this population of students is so rewarding!

  • See if you can find out the district philosophy/teacher practices for ELL's..we prescribe to SIOP. Do most of the ELL's have the same L1 or different?

Familiarize yourself with the assessment your state requires to determine language proficiency (Las etc.)

I'm tired and can't think, but what I've found is good ELL practices are good teaching practices in general and improve your overall teaching.

I know that the district uses the ELPA as means of assessment and that SIOP is the model they prescribe to. I have had moderate training in the SIOP model and tried to use it in my student teaching placement whenever I could.

  • I'd also mention how you plan to work with the classroom teacher.  I know in my school (with 50+ ESOL students from over 20 countries) our ESOL teachers do very very little pull-out instruction.  They push into our rooms and teach what I teach.  They may pull their students in a small strategy group.  We also use the SIOP practice.

I think a PP mentioned this, but find out what accomodations ESOL students have with your sttae testing.
