How to clean a front loading washing machine?

Our house which we rent, came with a front loading washing machine. The inside rim and all around that area gets disgustingly dirty, grimy, old water etc.  Is there an easy way people clean this or prevent it from happening in the first place? Thx!

  • Run the machine empty with white vinegar or bleach in it every so often and leave the door open (just a crack) between washings so the rubber ring can dry out.

  • Mine has a clean cycle that they recommend using once a month to prevent soap buildup.  For the water in the rubber seal, you should probably either wipe it out after each use, or leave the door open so that it can air dry.  My w/d are in the basement so I just leave the door open when it's not in use.
  • To keep it from getting yucky, use white vineger with every load you wash.  Pour a small amount of vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser.  Your machine will not get a musty smell and your clothes will not smell like vinegar.

This is what I do and works like a charm.
  • I also use a bit of vinegar on a cloth and wipe the rubber seal clean every so often, and the glass just to keep the gunk from building up or smelling.

I wish I had though to use vinegar when i had my top loader, that thing stunk to high heaven.
