Recurring nightmare

Anyone want to play psychiatrist this afternoon?

I have been having nightmares the past few weeks that are different, but have the same theme. The jist of each one is that DH and I are somewhere happy, things are good and then something bad happens and DH is suddenly gone. I spend the rest of the dream searching for him but I can't find him and I get more and more upset as it goes on.

I keep waking up panicked and sometimes crying. I know that I have a tendency to have more nightmares when I'm extra anxious. The summer before my freshman year of college I had all out night terrors complete with screaming in my sleep. But now, I'm not sure what it is that's bothering me so much. And I'm not sure why it's always the same nightmare where I lose DH but it's starting to become a bigger issue because a) I'm sleeping like crap and b) I'm an anxious mess afterward.

Re: Recurring nightmare

  • I'm a psychologist...is that close enough? Smile

    Dreams are all about accompanying feelings, so it sounds like you're feeling some intense anxiety about something. It probably has nothing to do with your DH, but he's representing something you're afraid to lose (e.g., freedom, childhood, yourself). These kind of dreams are common around times of transition or if you've recently had a loss and are thinking about death. The only advice I can offer is to think about any upcoming changes in your life, no matter how minute they seem and examine your feelings about them. Sorry you're having such anxiety. Good news is once you figure out what's causing it and explore your feelings a bit more, the nightmares should go away. {{hugs}}

  • I know nothing about dreams and what it means but I hope it ends soon - I absolutely hate having dreams like that.
  • Thanks V! The nightmares seemed to coincide with the beginning of the school year. I know I'm seriously anxious about this semester since there's a lot of pressure to do well so that might be it. Hopefully things will settle into place and I won't be such a mess.
