The Discovery Channel drama

So I'm sure everyone's heard about the hostage situation that went down at the Discovery Channel building in MD.  Here's some random trivia... John Hendricks, the founder of the Discovery Channel, went to the same high school as me!  Obviously not at the same time, but it's kinda crazy to think that someone from my not-great-at-all HS actually went on to do something HUGE.

  • I haven't heard anything about the hostage sitch...what happened?

  • Some psycho protester (who has been arrested for protesting at the Discovery Channel building before) held 3 people hostage with a gun and claiming he had explosives strapped to his chest.  The police killed him.

  • What exactly can you protest with the Discovery Channel?!  They are some of my favorite channels on DirecTV.  One less thug in the world, darn.

  • He's a total freak... he's against overpopulation (so he protests shows like Kate Plus 8, and the Duggar-crazies) and he thinks that humans are complete filth and overpollute (which we do, but I wouldn't take someone hostage over it).

  • oh my gosh! The world is WAY overpopulated and those shows do set terrible examples (no offense to anyone, but because of overpopulation i believe it's environmentally irresponsible to have more than two children per couple) but yeah I definitely would not threaten people with guns or hold anyone hostage over it! holy poop.

  • Hayley, you would hate my family then.  My dad is one of 10 kids, my mom is one of 12.  There are four kids in my family, which is what most of my aunts and uncles have...some of my aunts and uncles have 6, 7, and 8 kids.  My sister's husband is one of 9 kids.  I plan on having at least 3 or 4.

  • I agree with Hayley on that one, actually - I think it's irresponsible to have more than 2 kids (unless you have 1 baby and then a set of twins and it's not like you can plan that - it just happens!) But to plan out 3, 4, 5 kids or more....isn't doing the planet any favors.

I mean, I know the Duggars are on some mission from God to procreate as much as possible, but I'm not sure God intended a woman's ute to be that overused. I mean, the last baby was born sooo early and had all those health issues. I hope that's a sign to STOP there.  And one has to wonder if all 19 of theirs or all 8 of Jon & Kate's kids are honestly getting parented in the way they deserve to be when there's so much competition for attention / resources, etc.

I know it's all controversial and yeah, I certainly wouldn't be taking any hostages over it like that nutjob did, but there is some validity to his point. He just went about expressing it in an entirely inappropriate manner....

  • Hah I certainly don't hate people that have a ton of kids (okay but I rather dislike the Duggars they are just psycho!!) My mom is one of 8 kids! I am upset that no one teaches people about overpopulation these days! I think maybe if people were more informed they would make much different choices. Most people have no idea what a huge impact we make on our planet, and it's really sad to know that maybe if people had started educating the public about it YEARS ago things could be a little different.

Though I do think it's selfish if someone knows all of the impacts of having so many children but still has a bunch just because they want to. (Plus dear god I can't understand why anyone would want that many kids! Lol)

Shouldn't he have gone to TLC then? I read an article CNN posted. Seems like the guy wasn't very mentally stable.

Well that's just the thing with the Duggar's... and it annoys the heck out of me.  In their culture or religion (however you prefer to address it) the older girls take care of the younger children once they reach a certain age and are no longer being "nurtured" by the mother.  They have a "buddy" so to speak.  This is all so that mom and dad can have the private time they need to procreate yet again.  (And this is the case in most Christian Fundamentalist/Quiverful/Gothard families)

It's a horrible way to raise your children IMHO (and everyone is entitled to their own).  But I can't imagine having a child and NOT raising him or her myself.  Isn't that the whole point of having a child anyway?

All I know is that I am finished at 2. Yes

I read or heard somewhere that he thought the Discovery Channel had the ability to "fix" things..... overpollution, overpopulation, etc.

  • I don't think there is anything wrong with having a larger family. I am an only child and I missed out on large family vacations, Christmases & Thanksgivings, etc. So I hope to have at least 3-4 kids to enjoy those experiences as a parent.

However, I don't plan on having a tv show just to make enough money to take care of all of them....

  • Discovery Channel owns TLC I believe. That is why he went there.
