Possible new venture....

Backstory: MIL made cakes and sold them to a local resturant for near nothing. She enjoys baking and it was a stress reliever after a hard day. Well the resturant sold out to another guy who is a jerk and he told MIL that she could not make cakes anymore...we are not clear on his reasoning the only thing we know for certain is her is a jerk! Long story short MIL has been making cakes and selling to people she works with or her friends. She started making cheesecakes and has gotten VERY good at that and the are possibly the best cheesecakes I have ever tasted.

Well last wednesday when I was over at her house somehow we got on the subject of cakes and I mentioned that I would love to take a class to learn how to do fondant work and stuff. She said she would love to go with me. And this set the wheels turning in our heads.

This is VERY early in works but me and MIL are thinking about opening a small bakery to sell cakes, cheesecakes, cupcakes, cookies, brownies. The main focus would be to push the cheesecakes simply bc they are to die for and there is not alot of people in our town doing this. And we think that they would draw enough business in that we could push our other goodies.

MIL is looking at getting a small business loan and I am looking at classes for us to take to expand our knowledge. We have already looked at places we could set up shop.

I am so excited about this. To be honest this would be my dream job. I love baking and cooking so much.

I have told one IRL friend about it and she is fully supporting us and is excited but I dont want to tell alot of people just simply if we cant get things going I dont want to have to answer so many questions.

Re: Possible new venture....

  • That is awesome!! I say go for it and good luck! It's along the lines of what my mum and I want to do - we want to open a tea room some day. I have to say I'm pretty modest but people I don't know try my cookies and seem to fall in love so I really think I need to start selling them. Maybe I can open up an Etsy shop once I'm settled in with baby and such and see how that goes and then we can venture to our tea room idea later down the line!!

That's really exciting and awesome that MIL could get the loan.

  • she is eventually wanting to do something along the lines of a tea room. But we would sell sandwhiches and salads and people could rent the spot out for showers and stuff.

yeah she called me monday and said she talked to her banker and with this administration they are really pushing for small business loans and for women.

  • that's very exciting carmen! That would be so much fun!

can I ask though..what would she need the loan for? I know a ton of people who have gotten way in over their heads b/c they invest or take out a loan to start up a business and then the business doesn't make and they're out a ton of money. I'd try to invest as little money as possible.

  • That is great and sounds yummy. Also look into grants and things so that she doesn't have to pay it back.

    Can't wait to hear more.

We have to have a seperate building and all kinds of other things to be approved by the health dept. And right now we are thinking about going in with a business to do their cakes and we have to be approved by the health department.
