Grocery Bill is out of Control

Every month I track our expenses and last month we spent $598.00 on groceries! On two people. Granted we don't eat out alot but $600, really?! (Most months we average about $500.00)

I also make most of our meals from scratch as we rarely buy anything processed. We only eat meat about 3-4 time as week since I don't like it. Granted we buy free range organic meat when we do eat it but I though going down to 3-4 times a week would help offset the cost.

I really need to start meal planning and grocery shopping once a week I think.

Care to share what your grocery bills are so I can compare and see if our's are out of control or no?

Re: Grocery Bill is out of Control

  • We typically spend under $400 for a month (for 2 adults and a toddler). We eat mostly organic food as well.
  • No advice here. In the past three weeks we've spent over $600 on groceries. I honestly don't understand how people eat on less; I think groceries must just cost more here? We don't eat extravagantly- I'm a vegetarian and my husband eats very little meat. We try to make lots from scratch. But we made a veggie stirfry last night and the ingredients for it cost us over $10. I thought stirfries were supposed to be cheap, and I guess I could have gone cheaper with some of the ingredients, but it still wouldn't have been a cheap meal.

  • We spend about $400 - $500 a month on groceries for the two of us.  We probably go out for dinner about once a week and eat at the IL's once every other week.
  • We spend $400-$500 a month for 2 adults, a toddler, and formula for an infant.  We rarely go out for dinner.  We spend over $20 a week on milk.

  • We typically spend about $400-$500 a month on groceries for 2 adults. This includes eating/ordering out which we normally do once a week. Although, these past 2 weeks we've been really lazy to cook and have been eating out more than we should!
  • We are spending approximately $700/month for 2 adults, and 2 kids. That total does include diapers too so when you take that into account, we are probably spending close to what you are.  I find that grocery prices in Edmonton have increased significantly over the last 2 years.
  • Try not to compare your costs to Ontario. My parents live in Calgary and the food is definitely more expensive there than it is here (in Toronto). Especially grain products (cereal!!!) and cheese. Cereal here is usually $3.99 a box. Seriously. It's like $8/box in Calgary. Ridiculous. 1kg blocks of cheese go on sale here for $3.99-6.99 and they are $15 in Calgary. So take your budget with a grain of salt.
  • We keep costs down by buying what is on sale. I meal plan around the sales. If peppers are lik 2.99/lb I don't buy them. If pop isn't on sale, I don't buy it. If meat is on sale I will buy a second one and freeze it for future use.
  • We have been spending about 400 a month on groceries for two adults. This has been our approximate for awhile now but we just went to an all cash budget so now that I physically have the cash in my hand I have found it so much easier to stay within the budget and now care about overage.

I plan my meals ahead and rarely make a second trip to the grocery store.

  • Thanks ladies. I feel a bit better now. I am on MM quite a bit and they always comment on $200 grocery budgets for two people. I was pretty sure that groceries are significantly lower in the States but wanted to make sure. I have also heard the groceries are alot cheaper in places like Ontario compared to Alberta. Ugh. I am starting to meal plan so I am hoping that will make a dent in our grocery bill by about $50-75.

  • We spend about $400/month on groceries (including sundry items and lunches). Plan, plan, plan. That's the key. I replied in the post aboce re: food items costs.
