I need a cleaning coach

I need one of those HGTV teams to come in and stage an intervention. I approached this weekend with a "be ruthless" frame of mind, and I just opened a box of my old high school drama and music trophies. I know they're just those generic plastic things, but I just don't know what to do. Should I make an "unsure" box and revisit it when we move, likely next summer?

I feel good about ditching old sheet music that's water damaged or just old, and I discovered not one or two, but 4 old pillows in our blanket chest. I don't know how we ever got 4 spare old pillows!

How do you approach cleaning out old stuff? Is there a secret trick? I feel lost. I think I need to leave the basement for tomorrow and attack another room.

Re: I need a cleaning coach

  • Here's what I saw or read somewhere and I really liked the idea and someday I'd like to try it if I can get my husband to cut his crap down.

Get two rubbermaid tubs, the big ones the college kids use for moving.  One for you, one for hubs.  You can fill it with your sentimental stuff, trophies, yearbooks, etc, but you only get one tub.  When it's full and you have more stuff, you have to decide what's most important.

If I had old high school trophies I'm pretty sure I would not save them, especially when moving.  It's not something I would ever display or look at, and you have the memories do you really need a chunk of plastic?  That's just how I look at it.  If they were high quality and it was for something significant, like you broke a record or something, then I would probably keep it.

  • That's a good idea. That's what I'm struggling with: they ARE hunks of plastic, but they're for "Outstanding Soloist", "Music Department Award" (basically an MVP-type thing)...I know it's silly, but I worked my butt off in music and theater, so these aren't just "thanks for participating, here, have a trophy" things.

I think I'll do the tub thing. Someday, my kids and grandkids can throw them away and wonder why Gram kept such junk lying around all those years.

That sounds like a good plan.  And everyone needs a Gran with weird junk.

  • We did the tub thing, worked great for us....What if you bought a small photo album and took pics of the plaque part that reads what it is for, or can you remove the plaque things and put them in a cute lil box (like a lil box you would get business cards in, but nicer)?
