Sex hurts...

Ever since I had a bad yeast infection, sex has been painful. I went to my Dr, she said everything looked good, finished my antibiotics on Monday. We had sex last night and it hurt like a b*tch. We even used lubricants thinking maybe that would help, no such luck. Has anyone else had painful sex after a yeast infection? If so how long did it hurt for and any suggestions that could lessen the pain at all?

thanks

  • Perhaps this is a question for your doctor and not a message board.

  • What kind of hurt, though? Is it a burning, itching, tightness?

I do agree that you need to tell your doctor. Sometimes just a phone call to your OBGYN can get you on the line with a nurse...

  • I had that problem from january to april. And it hurt really really bad. All you can do is ease into it and give it time it will eventually stop hurting

  • I've been having this problem for over a year. It started out as a yeast infection (I think) and the pain comes back almost every month about a week before my period starts. Lasts through the end of my period. Sometimes I get a yeast infection with the pain, sometimes not. It sucks. I've been to 4 OBGYN's and two regular doctors. None of them know what it is or why it's happening or what to do about it. I don't really have any advice. I started using Vagisil Satin. That helps temporarily with the itching but it doesn't help with making sex more comfortable. Having sex feels like someone is rubbing sand paper on the outside of my vagina.

  • Yeast infections have always been a big problem for my mom, something we have all found (as three daughters trying to avoid them as well) is that cutting back on the amount of yeast in your diet reduces the amount of yeast in your system and thus reduces your chances of getting a yeast infection... Also try things that tend to cut yeast (you know, like a basic cuts an acid), if I remember right garlic is one of them, I happen to love garlic and cook with it all the time. Also see if there's anything you can change in HIS diet, when you're in contact things in his system can easily transfer over through general excretion, and while it doesn't usually make too much difference, it can when you're still so sensitive, as it seems you are. Next try cleansing (the outside, never douche) with a light salt water solution, maybe even try a teatree oil wash, it tends to help with skin problems, and while yeast infections are different there's no harm in trying. Lastly see if you can try different lubes. I know there are some that definitely irritate my skin, KY so far seems to have the most agreeable formula for me. Just try to think about all the substances in and around you that come in contact with your skin, the likelihood of them causing irritation, and see if you can find any for more sensitive skin, or even get samples and do test runs... that's all I can think of for now.. best of luck!
  • I would try a different lube. That can make all the difference. Last week I had the worst pain and burning and itching and it was all from the lube that we used. I have never had a yeast infection (that i know of...knock on wood) but it sounds pretty painful. Try a different lube and see if that helps and definitely cleaning a few times a day. I have some wipes that I got a while back that are cooling and cleaning. Its a baby wipe for "female areas" and I love them. Try that for the burning and itching. Good luck!
  • I don't know about anyone else but I tend to get a yeast infection AND bladder infection together, so is it possible that you have a bladder infection too?  Also I would check out what type of Lube you are using, make sure it isn't flavored or anything like that.  Just plain ol' Ky is the best IMO for avoiding yeast infections, bladder infections, or just regular skin irritation.  Also might want to consider using a condom next time, sometimes semen can be an irritant.
  • I've heard men can carry the bacteria for yeast infection and unknowingly keep giving it to you, so you might want your husband to be checked for that (he otherwise feels no symptons).
  • Okay, first of all, you didn't take antibiotics for a yeast infection. You took an anti-fungal (most likely diflucan). Antibiotics can cause yeast infections.

Anyway, it can take up to 7 days for the medicine to have it's full effects. If your yeast infection was that bad, you may still have it and may need another round of meds to help get rid of it. Or, your vagina may still need some time to heal up after the infection. Give yourself a week of rest (keep DH happy with oral and hand jobs), and then get back into it and see if it's still painful. If so, you should see your doc again. GL!

ETA: You should also start taking probiotics - you can get them in the natural food section of most stores - this can help prevent yeast infections, since good bacteria will fight the yeast for you. I also agree with PP who said to cut down the yeast you consume. It really does help. :)

  • It is possible that you now have a bacterial infection.  Sometimes being treated for yeast allows bacteria to go unchecked, creating another infection.

I had a problem about 2 years ago where I would cycle b/t yeast and bacterial infections. This went on for about 2 years...it also lead to EXTREMELY painful intercourse or random vaginal pain.  I would go to the gyno and they would find absolutely nothing.  My FI was treated for both yeast and bacteria, in case he was continually giving it back to me.  Eventually, I stopped going to a regular gyo b/c they weren't helping me.  I found a pelvic pain specialist in my area and was finally given a diagnosis: vulvodynia.  I would look into finding a pelvic pain specialist if this problem continues and your regular gyno continues to find nothing irregular.
