s/o: how much do you pay for...

a dozen eggs?

4L milk?

a loaf of bread?

a brick of cheese (roughly 1000 grams)

a pound of bananas, a pound of apples, or any other produce you can remember?

I spend (south central BC):

$4.45 for a dozen eggs

$4.95 per 4L jug of milk

$1.75 per loaf of bread

$9.99 for a brick of cheese

right now bananas are $0.45/pound, but they're usually closer to $0.70. Apples are about $1.25/pound. That's all I can remember off the top of my head, I'll have to dig out a receipt for other produce prices. I shop at Superstore. Safeway and SaveOn are both more.

I'm having a tough time keeping my grocery bill low and based on the post below others are too, so I just wanted to compare to see how some people spend $400 or less per month, when we just can't. I tried to pick basic things that most people would buy.

I am pretty much the same as this since I am right out of Edmonton. My eggs are $4.50 though as I buy free range organic. My bread used to cost me $5 for two loaves for whole grain at Costco but I just started making my own bread two months ago.

  • a dozen eggs? $2.17 (large eggs, cheapest brand)

    4L milk? $3.99-$4.19

    a loaf of bread? $2.50

a brick of cheese. I only buy on sale if 5.99 or less, which happens frequently (1 week every month or so)

bananas are usually 0.69/lb but sometimes as low as 0.49/lb recently. Apples are usually 0.99-1.29/lb

I shop at the cheapest of cheap stores in Toronto - No Frills, Food Basics and Wal-mart.

  • To be honest, I have no idea what I pay for *any* of those things! lol I don't know if you menu plan, but it's a really easy way to cut down on the food bills. Typically, we spend about $400/month on groceries (including lunches and sundry items - shampoo, etc). It's all about planning. I never buy anything that is not on my list. I rarely have food go to waste b/c we don't have a bunch of excess in the cupboard or fridge.
