Toilet rim being destroyed by cleaner?

I seem to destroy my toilet lid and rim a little bit more every time I clean the toilet. I use a basic bleach bathroom cleaner, but when I wipe it down with a sponge white flecks of the material come off, and the lid gets streaks from where the bleach sits! It seems to be giving off a weird odor too. Maybe from making more porous? I'm sad to say this is the second lid I've done this to with various cleaners.

I know this shouldn't be happening, but what am I doing wrong? Any suggestions on what I should be cleaning it with, or how?

Re: Toilet rim being destroyed by cleaner?

  • I am a newbie to the Nest, but a few years ago during the wedding preparations, I was a faithful Knottie :-)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  • Like the poster above, I just use a vinegar/water mix for cleaning the bathroom, but even when I used conventional cleaners (Clorox wipes or Scrubbing Bubbles), this never happened.  Are you using a bathroom cleaner with bleach, or straight bleach?

What kind of a sponge are you using; a soft one or a scrubby/scratchy one?

You say this is the second lid you've had this happen to; were they separate bathrooms or did you already replace this lid once?  Replacing it was going to be my suggestion.

  • It could just be an old seat, they're not meant to last forever and are pretty inexpensive and easy to replace.

  • It's a Clorox clean-up spray, not full bleach, but it could be the wrong stuff to use. I use a regular toilet designated dish sponge.

What is the mix of water and vinegar some of you ladies use for cleaning?

How long does a toilet seat last before it's considered to be old?

    Thank you for your help

  • "white flecks of the material come off"

Sounds like you have a wooden toilet seat and the paint is coming off. When you replace it, buy a plastic one. The nicer ones cost a bit more but will last longer. (If you or anyone in your house ever sits on the lid of the toilet, make sure to get one with a thick lid, not a cheapie one or the lid will crack first)
