Didn't someone here have a low fluid issue?

I want to say it was NP but I may be making that up. I apologize for my brain being a waste land.

I went for an u/s on Friday and Baby A has "significantly less" fluid than Baby B. Two weeks ago they were even. The level wasn't so low they had to take the babies out but they have me guzzling water and will check again on Tuesday. I get NSTs twice a day and so far no signs of distress and she's still moving around.

I'll be 33w on Tuesday and scared shiitless they are coming out next week.

So if I am remembering a Caribbean fluid issue can you tell me about it, how long it went on and what you did to get it back up, if anything?

Re: Didn't someone here have a low fluid issue?

  • It was Noisy.  I think she was at 38 weeks or so and they just induced.

  • my coworker had low fluid. they monitored and had her increase fluids but ended up inducing at 37 weeks.

but i honestly think she didn't increase her fluids because she wanted her daughter out and felt like since she was past 36 weeks that it was safe

  • It was me! Your remembory isn't broken. When they did my first NST at 33 (or maybe 34?) weeks it was down around 6, so they had me start drinking at least 3 liters of water a day. It didn't make a gigantic difference, but my fluid did go up enough that it was almost always in the low end of acceptable for the rest of my pregnancy (I measured around 8 the rest of the time).  Then at 39 weeks it was going down again, so they just induced to be on the safe side.

I don't know if it's the case everywhere, but I had a few NSTs in L&D and the residents that did the fluid ultrasounds were less good about getting accurate measurements than the nurses in the clinic that did NSTs regularly and the high risk OB. Both times I had an NST in L&D the residents decided my fluid was under 5 and had to be induced, and then the high risk OB would come down to do an assessment and re-check and he'd measure me up around 7 or 8. Measuring is so subjective that there's a chance the baby was just in a position that made it hard to find enough pockets, or that your person wasn't experienced enough to know when a pocket was usable or not. And if the baby hasn't peed recently it could be a little lower than usual as well.

One of the high risk OBs I saw said he didn't really think drinking a lot of extra water did much, but that it didn't hurt so I should do it, so I did. The other thing they told me was to relax and rest as much as possible, but you're already on bedrest, so you're good there.  How often are they checking it?

  • I also had a slightly low fluid scare at 20 weeks. They had me pounding fluids and went back in for a second scan a few days later. My fluids had gone up to acceptable levels, and I was fine for the rest of the pregnancy. They just wanting me drinking tons of water everyday, and taking it easy. Hopefully it will be the same story for you.

  • I had the head of perinatology at the hospital checking the fluid so I'm not worried about it being accurate. I wish I knew what the number was but I was so caught off guard with the problem all I could ask was if they were taking the babies that day. I've been here for cervix and PTL, where did this fluid problem come from?!

They did tell me it might be that she hadn't peed in a while. It would be just like her to cause all this worry over just pee. She's a little rascal in there.

I was there on Friday and they are checking me again tomorrow. I will go twice a week until it's go time. The give me NSTs twice a day but they were doing that already.  I also got the second round of steroids just in case they come early.

I hate the uncertainty. They could tell me tomorrow they are coming out. It could be a few days...few weeks. I could really use a crystal ball right now.

  • I hope it's just that she hadn't peed for awhile and that everything is normal when they check it again. You don't need anything else to worry about.

  • best of luck to you and your babies, BB!  I hope your little girl pees like a racehorse : ) and solves her fluid problem.  Just hang in there, you are doing everything right for your babies and I'm sure you are just scared as hell and want to keep them in as long as possible.  I'll be sending you Charmin, Northern Quilted, Cottonelle, Angel Soft, and even some Generic!
