Any teachers getting Ed.Ds/Ph.Ds?

I am an elementary teacher considering going back to school for my doctorate.  I am interested in a variety of fields- urban education (all my teaching experience has been in Title I schools), and also literacy/language.  Any experience with either of these fields in graduate study- what my future options would maybe be OUTSIDE of the classroom?  I love teaching but I can't do this forever. :-)  Thanks so much for any input or experiences.

  • I haven't done it myself, but the teachers I've known who went on to get doctorates all moved into either campus administration or working at central office.

  • Forgot to mention.... I also don't want to ever be a school administrator - not for me! ;)
  • I only know two people who went on to get their doctorates. One teaches at the local university for their teaching credential program. The other works for the federal department of education.
  • I'm not sure how helpful this is, but my H plans to get his. He has his EdM now. He's beginning to research exactly what he wants to get his doctorate in now. He's like you and doesn't want to teach forever (he's been teaching for 6 years). He's very interested in urban education and administration. Luckily we live in a city with a lot of good colleges so he has several options. Good luck to you!
  • My current plan is to finish a 3rd year of teaching ( I work at a Title 1, inner city school) , then apply for a Doctoral Program in Urban Education Policy.  I'm really interested in the Ph.D. program at USC.

The dynamics of schools in LA are changing. It's really an exciting time. I'd love to be on the research side of education policy.

One of the teachers I work with, who was also my BTSA mentor, did this program at USC. She really liked it but she said it was A LOT of work. Good luck to you!! Researching education policy and making positive, lasting changes would be so amazing. :)

  • I have a phd in Autism Education/Behavior Anaylsis.   I have my Masters in School Leadership so I could one day be a Supervisor in Special Services or a School Principal. I finished everything last year, it was a long haul, but well worth it at work. My salary went up ten fold and I teach night classes and consult privately for parents with children with autism. So it has opened doors for sure.
  • I'm planning on trying out counseling in a few years, but I do know of a coworker who is getting a PhD in curriculum and instruction.  These people research new teaching methods, content, etc., and guide the teachers in their instruction.  I'm like you, I love teaching right now, but I don't think I want to do it for the next 30 years.
