How is the running coming?! I have to be honest, I haven't followed the blog much lately because I'm back in school and burning the candle at both ends again.

My half marathon training is going great! The race is Oct 24th so I still have a month and a half roughly. I had a set back about 2 weeks ago with really bad calf cramps but I took a week off, iced and stretched like a man-woman and learned some tricks for running (i.e. when it starts to cramp, stop, induce the calf cramp deeper, like a charlie horse, let it pass, stretch for a few seconds and start running again - works like a charm, but hurts like hell). lol. Anyway, started back at it this week and ran 4 miles as my base mileage 2 times, a short 2 miler, and then today I went out for a 7 mile run that turned into 9ish (that's what I get for not mapping my runs out)! I'm so proud of myself, never in a million years did I think I would ever run 9 miles. Whew.

I run with DH who is much much faster than I am, and I just keep telling him, I may run slow, but I run hard! lol.

  • Congrats! it sounds like you're doing great! I haven't really been keeping up the blog very well because of school...

but last week I really started running again. DH and I did two 3 milers, and today I'm going to do 4. I took a while off during August, and now my body is punishing me big time. It really hurts when I run, in my feet and calves.

Thanks for the info on calves! that seems to be my problem almost everytime.

There has been a turn of events, and I can actually run the 10k that I was originally training for, and that is on Sept 18th, so I have to get my butt in gear. I'm going to re-look at my training plan to see what looks best for the next two weeks. The best part is that DH even said that he is going to run it with me at my pace, and I am so thankful that he is sacrificing his own time to help me keep at it.

  • Yeah, definitely try the calf thing. Mine were getting to the point that I would hobble 2 miles back to the house (out of a 3 mile run...) The other day I got a really bad cramp a mile in to the 9 mile run, induced the cramp, stretched for a few seconds, and then was fine for the rest of it.

As far as training goes, you should be set! If you can run 4 miles, you can run 6. I'd keep 3-4 miles as base mileage and then do one long run a week. If you up it to 5 and then 6 it'll only take 2 weeks to really get in shape for it. You may not have a record time, but you'll definitely be able to finish.

GL and let me know how the race goes! That is so sweet of your H to run with you. D used to run with me but he was bored and hated paying the race fees if he wasn't "racing", you know? So I told him in this half to run his best and I'll see him at the end. As it turns out, 4 people from my degree program are running, and 2 of them are about my pace, so I think we're all going to run it together. The one has run the marine corps marathon twice, so she'll be integral when I hit a wall lol.
