Housewarming party question?
I just bought my first home and was wondering if it's proper to register for housewarming gifts, or is that tacky? We are pretty much starting from scratch. . .
Re: Housewarming party question?
This gets asked with some regularity. There are a few people that will say it's okay, but generally it's considered tacky. Most people will come to the party with a token gift (wine, plant, small gift card), but people aren't going to be buying you a lawn mower or a set of dishes.
If someone asks it's okay to say you have nothing, but I agree that registries for a housewarming are tacky.
Exactly what pp stated. I would bring a bottle of wine to a housewarming.
This.
I personally don't immediately go for the "go-to" housewarming gifts, because I want to make sure I bring something the person/couple/family actually wants or needs for their new home, but I would think a registry is kind of odd and, yes, a little tacky. So, I'm the type who will ask if they need/want anything -- if they tell me (or hint at) items they really want/need, I try to either get something in that catergory or at least get a gift card for a store where they could buy something in that catergory. If they say "Nope, we're set!" then I go for the plant or bottle of wine.
For a Housewarming Party I would bring a homemade sign that said Home Sweet Home, a wreath hanger along with four different holiday decorations to hang on the front door, a houseplant, Bottle of Wine/Vodka, a basket with a theme, Home Depot Gift Card or something along those lines or a combo of items depending on how well I knew the people. I would be a little put off about the idea of having to pick something off a registry for a Housewarming Party.
This does get asked a lot for some reason lately... I agree with all pp. Registries are for weddings and babies.
