Curious PG ? - working and BH

No, I'm not pg. :)  Just making that clear first, haha.

One of my friends is due Sept 17 (although it sounds like she could have the baby any day now).  She said she's been getting the Braxton Hicks (sp?) contractions and called them practice contractions.  This is her 3rd kid btw.

She's a SAHM and after this past Sunday when I saw her, she said she's not leaving the house until she goes to the hospital, other than for the Dr appts.  I asked why and she said that the BH contractions can get really bad and if she drives she has to pull over and can't drive until they're done.

So, I'm curious.  For those of you who worked up until labor, how do you handle working/commuting and this kind of issue?  It's seems kind of scary to me- my commute home takes an hour and I can't imagine having to pull over and wait out contractions or something.  But I know women who have worked up to labor (in fact, a former coworker went into labor AT work).  And what if you're in a meeting or something and get these?

Re: Curious PG ? - working and BH

  • I guess they are different for everyone. I had them but it definitely wasn't something I couldn't carry on regular life with. Not a big deal for me at all.

  • I got them and didn't even realize I was having them or and type of contractions at all. I worked up until the friday before my due date (which was a monday or tuesday.. i forget).

For me, they didn't stop me from anything...it just felt like my belly was tightening up.. no pain. I was having them that whole last week of work and didn't even know thats what they were. I continued businesss as usual

  • Ok.  Her talking about all that made me nervous for someday for me, and made me wonder how you girls all did that!

Maybe I need to stop talking to the pregnant women because everyone IS different and all talking does is scare me more about the whole thing. Wink

I can NOT wait to see her baby though.  She said I can hold him.

  • You will hear so many horror stories...for me.. it was nothing like any of the horror stories i heard lol. In fact, My water broke at 11:30pm and I still didn't even feel my contractions at all up until about 10 minutes before they brought the epidural in (4am). I had an easy labor...the whole time my big sister was like "HOW ARE YOU SO CALM!?" as she paced the floors lol
  • The only thing that stopped  me in my tracks was when I schiatic (sp) pain here at the office.  One of the girls had to get my chair and roll me back to my cubicle.

As far as BH it was just tightening of the stomach.  Don't worry.... to me, labor was nothing like what you see on tv.

Although Lo came early, I had a quick and easy birth with her.  Contractions felt like really really bad cramps, then the epidural came in and all was good.

Wow I guess I'm having nest problems.

Now that you mention it, I do remember you having those pains during your pregnancy.  So it sounds like coworkers and managers can be accomodating.

We all need to live in Europe, where maternity leave is longer!  I just know that I will need to work.  I always grew up saying I would be a SAHM but that will never happen.

And I'll keep watching this, because I'm curious about everyone else's experiences as well.  Is there anyone who had to work and had the BH contractions be bad enough that they affected you?

  • BH can also get worse the more pregnancies you have-- at least this is what my dr said because some of mine were worse with my 2nd
  • My BH were never painful.  Annoying and somewhat uncomfortable, but not painful.  Usually they were a sign I needed to drink more water or pee.

As far as working up until labor, I work about 1/2 a mile from the hospital that my midwives group delivers at.  If I'd gone into labor at work, I'd have been closer to the hospital than at home.  My commute's not that long, but my boss' water broke at work and then she drove herself home so I wasn't really THAT scared about it.  That said, my water broke at home (at 11PM) and my contrax started RIGHT away and they were bad - so it was a good thing I was home.

I've heard most labor starts at night, or at least that most water breaks spontaneously at night.  Anecdotally from people I know whose labor started by having their water break, the vast majority was when they were getting ready for bed.

Well that makes me feel better, too- that it seems to happen at night.  I had forgotten- I have a friend who had a baby almost a year ago, and her water broke when her husband smacked her butt.  Haha.  She didn't admit that to most people but told me when we went to visit them in the hospital.

And Cara, oh, that makes sense- maybe this is worse for her because it's her 3rd kid.

I think she's going to be induced today!!!!

I had just laid down in bed when i felt my water break lol I said "oh crap i think my water broke.." dh response was "are you sure? did you just pee urself again?" ahahahha.

  • I worked through my last week...and water broke at 3am on Sat morning. I had some painful BH the two weeks leading up, but it was no worse then period cramps coming and going...so I went to meetings and lunch and carried on like usual. Early labor just felt like continued ramping up of bad cramps...so no big deal. Active labor definitely got more painful but the breaks in between are nice and only transition was hard. After that, pushing urges and natural endorphins take over and feel pretty good (no epi or painkillers for me). But I guess every woman is different and maybe she really was having contractions and not just BH...I could see needing to stop and focus in those instances.
