Help! Sylvia's 45th birthday is in TWO WEEKS and I haven't made definitive plans yet. We like to do something extra-special for birthdays ending in 0 and 5, so I need to come up with something good, fast. (Yes, I should have planned this long ago; my new job has eclipsed all else lately, unfortunately.)
The challenge is that we only really have a long weekend (Sat-Mon, possibly Fri-Mon) due to our work obligations. She doesn't have a passport, and I'd like to keep the lodging & food under $1k if I can.
Top contenders so far (but I am really open to other suggestions!!): San Diego (but where to stay? she really likes the beach, but I don't see many places right on the water), Santa Fe (gay-friendly?), Disney World (silly to go for just a few days?), or stay local and do a couple of nights in a hotel in D.C. or Old Town Alexandria.
I feel like such a bad wife for not having this planned out yet. Thanks for any and all suggestions you may have...
Re: need birthday vacation ideas
It is leaf peeping season right now so a nice inn up in new england can always be fun. Hmm the cape is really nice and quiet this time of year same with Nantucket and Martha's Vinyard and I am sure there are some good deals around.
Oh and as for disney I think you only need a few days. I bet the Carolinas are still pretty nice this time of year. Ok I think I named every place on the globe. sorry
no worries! you can figure this out in 2 weeks and get great last-minute deals to boot
your first stop should be checking flights...with prices like these you may or may not be able to do your trip w/ a flight for under $1k - so start there. If you can fly, Sante Fe is definitely gay friendly (okay, not so much like provincetown or san fran, but lots of gay-owned and friendly places to stay)...do you know about purpleroofs.com? tons of options there:

I personally adore sante fe so that woudl be my top choice
If you want to stay on the water in San Diego, I can almost assure you that with flight you'll go over the $1k budget. Although, you might have luck looking for something on pacific beach rather than the more popular mission beach.
If you rule out flights and stay within driving distance, how about cape may? Its such a gorgeous spot and almost gets better off season - also, if you or silvia are into jazz, thier jazz fest is in a few weeks. definitely good times!

What about NYC (you could drive and save $$ or take the train)? Chicago? Boston? Miami? If you just have a long weekend, you may want to avoid longer flights so you can spend more time relaxing and not in airplane/airports.
We went to Rehoboth off season a few years ago and had a nice time. There is a really nice spa there and some awesome restaurants.
Good luck! And have fun!
Chicago? they have AWESOMe last minute deals, and it's a pretty sweet place.
Thanks for all the suggestions so far (keep 'em coming!). The $1k budget is for food & lodging only-- I'm not too worried about the flight because I am planning to use a 2-for-1 thing I have through Amex...
I will definitely have to check out the places you all recommended!
The other option is that I fly to Geneva (where S is right now) this upcoming weekend and we make that her birthday trip (she's there for work, but we'd tack on a few days). Anyone know of a place to find really fabulous last-minute international airfares?

Really consider Chicago.
They have some GREAT places to stay. Awesome food, and just an awesome feel. Also it's not pricey to stay at, and since O'hare is right there, it's a pretty cheap flight. You could do Chicago on 1k. Easy, and have lots left over.
Awesome muesums, great food, fantastic aquariums.
Also if 1k isn't including the flight, PORTLAND is amazing. They have some really cool hotels too. The jupiter is an amazing hotel, and there is soooooooooo much to do here. You'd love it!
Truly gay friendly, fantastic, food awesome sights, and we could do lunch.
;-)
San Diego is one of K's favorite place so that's our vote. K recommends the Holiday Inn on the Harbor for a budget friendly place with easy water access.

or for real luxury stay at the Hotel Coronado which has a buy two nights, get one free deal. This one gets my vote :-)

San Diego is my vote! I love it there!
I am a little biased after living there for 5 years...
but it is fantastic, gay friendly, close to Mexico, beaches, mountains, Los Angeles...
short notice + long weekend = Las Vegas!
Niagara falls is a great idea too.... I would opt for the canada side though. Much better views! good luck!
honestly, i didn't like chicago at all when i visited there. i've had friends who lived there and visited and loved it, but i wasn't a fan.
if it was me, i'd go to somewhere in new england or to niagara falls. i read somwhere recently that they have fireworks over the falls every weekend through the end of the year. i think that would be pretty cool, and the falls are gorgeous. i'd like to surprise c with a trip there sometime--she's never been. if you're in the d.c. area either of those options would be driveable.
Just FINALLY decided yesterday and got everything lined up-- Cape May it is. (Turns out we really didn't have time to fly anywhere, as I was hoping, since S didn't want to take any time off work.)
Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions!
