Gifts for a 1 year old

It's never too soon to start thinking of Christmas gifts. Both my niece and nephew will be one right around Christmas. I know for our niece DH's brother and our SIL and us will go together on a gift. Plus, it's our niece's birthday on Christmas day too. Do we have to get her two separate gifts? I would prefer to spend more money on one gift but...

What are some things that a one year old would like?

Re: Gifts for a 1 year old

  • I always think that books and music are great gifts for children. That being said Evan got some awesome gifts for his birthday.

    - a Bilibo (both large and small ones)

    - a Prince Lionheart ride on mouse

    - wooden blocks

    - simple puzzles

    - Melissa and Doug music makers

    - a wagon

    - large glitter filled bouncy ball

    - Zany zoo wooden activity cube

Those are great gift ideas! We got Andrew this activity cube, which he does seem to like, but yours looks way cooler!

I think one slightly larger gift will be fine for your niece for the next few years, but maybe you could consider getting her two separate gifts when she's old enough to understand. DH's birthday is on January 6, and he is still bitter about "getting stiffed" for birthday gifts. LOL

An old friend of mine has a Christmas Day birthday, and for her 30th she and her DH went away on a tropical vacation and completely ignored Christmas, just to make the day all about her for once.

  • A toy that they can push to learn to walk that turns into a ride on toy is great.  DS is 2 and still pushes his.

    Board books and puzzles

    Blocks

    Balls

  • DS got one of those foam character chairs that he loves to sit in/climb all over.  Seriously gives him hours of entertainment some days.

A walker/ride toy with sounds and lights.  Yes, the sounds get annoying but I don't think he would play with it as much if there wasn't fun music.

DO NOT get a little toy piano.  Their parents will hate you forever. haha.  True story.  He will freak out if we hide it and it's sooooo annoying.

    Trucks or anything with wheels

Balls, mini ball pit, some sort of ball toy (ds loves his busy ball popper but we can no longer find the balls that go with it)

As for the birthday/christmas gift - It may be ok this year and maybe next, but try to keep them seperate after that.  My birthday is Dec 28th and I'm pretty bitter about the whole double gift thing.  Especially since 6 months later my brother would get something worth the same amount just for his birthday.  There are so many things that I've gotten as gifts that are christmas and birthday gifts, yet if my birthday was in the summer I would still get that gift as only one occasion.  I also never got a birthday party because of when my day was and it was almost like I didn't get my special day, it was just another day... *disclaimer* I know it's not about the gifts, but to a kid they notice these things.  Now, I could care less about the whole gift thing, but growing up, it sucked.

  • I think everyone has given some great suggestions so far. I think when my niece & nephew turned one, I got them something from Leap Frog. They had so many toys already and clothes, so I was leaning towards something a little more "educational".

As for the Christmas/Bday thing...for a 1yr old...I don't think it would be an issue to do one big gift, but really...how big of a gift will this be for a 1yr old? Maybe it might be better to split it up into two gifts.

But, as kids get older and they know when their birthday is and when Christmas is...I think getting them a gift for each occasion is better. My bday is on New Year's Eve, so it sucked when I was a kid because it was close to Christmas, but sucks even more as an adult because everyone is out to party for New Year's Eve.

  • I agree with Vicki that kids that age usually have so many toys, that if you could buy something different that would be good - LeapFrog was a great suggestion, Noah learned his alphabet around 20-some months bc of the fridge magnets. Bath toys are another thing that people sometimes forget. any higher quality wooden toys are always appreciated by this mom, too.

The wooden toys is definitely something I am considering. I thought it would be good, more for my nephew than my niece, but to start a collection or something like that. Like a train set or ? We'll see though. Maybe that's more of a second birthday thing as trainsets are too small at that age (no?).

As for the two vs one gift. I might get my niece clothes or books for Christmas and a toy for her birthday or vice versa.

  • I bought my niece the little people animal farm, you know the one, it has its own commercial? A huge hit! She loves it so much and is very amused and my sister can actually get stuff done while she is playing. I highly recommend!
