Anyone done a long ass walk?

I am doing the Weekend to End Women's Cancers walk next weekend (60km over 2 days). Has anyone done a long walk like this and have any tips?

Re: Anyone done a long ass walk?

  • No, but good for you! I would think keeping hydrated is key.
  • They have rest stops every 5km or so with food and drinks for us. I just need to figure out when to take gaterade vs water.

I think the worst part will be having to get up on the 2nd day and do it all over again.

  • the second day will be hard for sure I would think. Maybe using either heat or cold?

    And stretching.

  • Good shoes and socks?

  • My aunt is doing one of those. The only thing I could think of is to have some extra socks in case they get wet.
I'm pretty sure it's pronounced your mom's a moron and if you didn't have your name legally changed by the age of 22, so are you. Unless you're from another continent. -Groomz
  • Stretching for sure. And I am going to make use of the free massages. Got some new shoes that I am breaking in and I am trying out a few difference pairs of socks to see which one's I like best. Right now it is calling for rain on Saturday so I may have to get more socks so I don't get blisters.
  • sometimes I feel like the stretch of my apartment from my comfy spot on the couch, the kind of spot where the cushion has perfectly molded itself around your cheeks and is holding it in a sweet sweet caress, to the kitchen/bathroom/front door/any other spot that requires me to move my ass from that position, is a long ass walk
  • Good for you!  I'm walking a half marathon in October, and pretty regularly do about 30 miles per week with one day being a long walk.

Sounds like you are on top of things.  Good socks are a must.  I like thin, double layered ones.  I get them at my local running shop.  Good shoes, but not new.  You will be more comfortable for longer if you don't have to carry hydration with you.  Utilize those drink/snack tables.

The only new suggestion I have is to carry a few GU energy gels with you.  They are great for keeping my blood sugar stable so that I don't hit the wall on my long days.

     Oh, and sunscreen!

  • Eat well the day before, and during the walk.  I second the suggestion of energy gels, as long as you drink a lot of water with them, as they're murder on your gut if you don't.

Have some of the special blister band-aids on hand for day 2.

If you're prone to chafing, smear some Bodyglide or Bag Balm over affected areas.

  • I did the 3-day, 60-mile walk for breast cancer two years ago. It is hard getting up to do it again, but it does push you through knowing that you're almost to the finish line. I second a lot of advice from above:

    1. Stay well hydrated. Drink before you feel very thirsty.
    2. Stay well fed... pack yourself some good snack so whenever the urge hits, you can nosh a little.
    3. Pack at least one extra pair of socks for each day, and pack them in Ziploc bags, so if it does rain, they don't get wet. Make sure you change your socks halfway through the day whether they feel damp or not.
    4. You can also pack a small container of Vaseline (or something similar), and if you feel yourself getting a "hot spot" (a spot getting rubbed that will become a blister), stop and apply some Vaseline, which will help eliminate friction on the spot. (They actually make stuff specifically for this: http://www.bodyglide.com/)
    5. Corny, but just keep reminding yourself that you can do it.

  • Thanks for all the advice!  Right now it looks like rain on Saturday so that may complicate things a bit. Lets hope it doesn't rain!

I also have to pump during the walk which is going to suck because it means I have to carry my pump and the milk with me. I think I have got it so that I only need to pump once during the actual walk (then back in the hotel) so hopefully it won't be too bad.

  • Do you have a lightweight pump? With my huge thing that would be heavy as hell.
  • Yep! I only have a manual once that is super light.
  • oh that's good. I would love something lighter for work because I have to cart my huge PISA around, but I need something fast and with major power at the same time.

Is it going to be cool enough that you won't need to ice the milk?

  • It is looking like it will be a high of 21C (70F). I was going to put it in a little isolated bag I have and I may just throw some icecubes in with it. I will have a fridge in my hotel room too.

Thankfully we aren't staying at the camp. Pumping in a tent with someone else + findiing a place to keep the milk would have been a nightmare.

  • yeah, that sounds dreadful. Adventures in pumping can be interesting for sure. I have no desire to ever pump while camping.
  • The worst so far was pumping in the bathroom of Toronto's train station right before the U2 concert. I felt so gross.

  • Omigod. That sounds disgusting.

I have to pump in a new place every day at work since I travel between schools. So far it has been cool, but I am waiting for the day they try to have me pump in the boiler room or something.

  • I have no desire to ever camp, let alone pump while camping.
  • The camping during the walk does not sound comfortable at all. It is 2 person tents set up right beside one another. I am not sure how many people camp but there are 6200 registered walkers this year.

At work I always pump in the same room. I had a security guard walk in the one time. He was walking right towards me (I was behind a privacy screen) and was asking what I was doing. I kept yelling "I'm pumping....ummmmmm...BREASTMILK". He must have been a young guy because he had no clue what I was talking about. I should have just started yelling "nipples, nipples"

  • My friend did the walk a few years ago and said the best thing she did to prepare was buy really, really good athletic socks.  other than the general fatigue she said it wasn't that bad.

  • I looove camping, but not while BFing, I'm sure.

I have my own office so I plan on shutting the door and hanging a handmade sign on it "Pumping in Progress" to keep from being disturbed.  I made a cute one for a coworker when she was pumping at work and it worked great.  I will be doing some actual BFing at work also when I have the kid with me (I may do this on occasion to give H a break and let him catch up on his sleep).

  • winger, have you thought about getting a second pump to keep at work so you don't have to schlep it back and forth?  I got one and it changed my whole attitude.  I only got a second b/c Adam could get the PISA cheap through a benefits program at work, but knowing what I know now, even without the discount, I'd either buck up and buy two, or leave the PISA at work and get a manual hand pump to keep at home.

I HATED carrying that bag on the subway.  HATED.

  • A second pump wouldn't help. i travel from school to school each day and I cover 100 schools, so there is not a place I could keep it. if I was in my office all day every day I would.

  • that blows.

  • Make sure your socks are a synthetic material and not cotton.  Cotton gives you blisters.

    That's all I got.

  • What about bag suggestions? I was thinking about getting a small backpack but don't know if a sling style would be easier?
  • For the long haul, I think that a backpack would be more comfortable than a sling.
