Bins at the grocery store instead of bags?

I have these awesome plastic tubs that I use for just about everything around the house.  I was thinking of using them in the grocery store instead of bags.  Two or three big bins are easier to carry to the house than bags, the bins are more reusable than bags (as in they last longer) and my dog doesn't shred the bins like he does the bags.  Is this an insane idea?

I'm also trying to remember to take my own containers when I go out to eat.  Rocky claims he'll disown me, but I'm sure I can get away with it!  I hate restaurant togo containers not only because they are so no EF, but because they take up so much space in my fridge.  One of these days I'll get around to making a cute fabric tote that says "Doggy Bag" or something else cute to put my containers in.

Re: Bins at the grocery store instead of bags?

  • I would not find bins easier.  they seem to bulky and too easy to put too much weight in.  However I've never seen your bins so I could be completely off base.

I love your idea of your own doggie bag.  I think that you would have to get something like a lunch bos kit to put in it or you would still get your food in the same containers then just put into your bag instead of a plastic bag.  Great idea!!  We don't go out to eat much now but I might have to make one up for "just in cases".

  • I'm not too concerned about weight.  They are the oval kind of tote where the top is shaped sort of like a Pringle. That probably makes no sense!

  • I don't think it's insane.  Whatever works for you.
  • I think that is a very good idea just make sure that you let the store know when you come in that they are yours and that you also have no intention of taking there bags.  This is the same thing they do in Germany everyone cares around a collapasable crate in their car and takes it into the store and takes it to their house (they did this when my parents lived there 25 years ago)

Just make sure you still have enough room in your cart for your groceries!

  • I think you should do whatever works for you.  If bins work better than bags, go for it!

  • The tiny grocery store in my hometown didn't have bags. Everyone just brought in milk crates to pack groceries.
  • My grocery store sells grocery bins:

    Love 'em. So convenient.

  • Interesting...I never thought about grocery bins. These would actually be nice for loading in the car and just taking out. But how well to they fit in the cart?

Well, the store that sells the bins has carts designed to hold 4 bins.

Other stores, they don't fit as well, but if I'm not out to buy a huge amount of food, it's no problem.

  • I just tried it today!   I used two bins which I got from BB&B for $5 each.  Ask for the seasonal Pringles shaped totes and they'll figure out what you're looking for.  In a deep cart you can fit two.  In a shallow cart I just shove the bins underneath.  They were way better than I'd imagined.  I still used a couple of bags for produce just to keep it from getting bruised, but that's it.  It was acutally way easier than bags.  I bought a couple more bins on my way home and will just keep a few in my car from now on.

PS: those bins also perfectly fit one load of laundry, a week's worth of recycling, ice and beer, and tons of other awesome stuff. I have about 10 of them.

  • Bins are SO much easier. Our local grocery store has sold them for years and they are great. You're right, it is easier to grab two or three bins and bring them in than a dozen bags.

ETA: I shop at the same store as uncannycanuck. Same bins. We fit four to a cart, but as she mentioned, the carts are designed to fit their bins. We load groceries into the bins when shopping, or stack the bins and put them in the cart.

  • I think these are great ideas!!  I think I will take my own container(s) the next time we go out to eat - it is such a waste with the take out containers!  I am also going to check out those totes at BB&B!

  • I take my own tupperware to restaurants too.  I always carry a big purse, so I just stash the container in there.
