Vitamin help

Okay, so, I'm trying really hard to be a good "grown-up".

One thing I'm making a valiant effort to do is take a multi-vitamin. I see how/why it's important and I'm sold on the whole concept of it. But here's the problem -- I have a hard time literally, physically taking the vitamin. It usually takes me two or three attempts to swallow the d*mn thing, and afterwards I feel totally nauseated and have a very sensitive gag reflex for about 30 minutes. It's misery.

Right now I'm taking One-a-Day Women's, which is the smallest/least offensive tasting (i.e., least chalk-y) vitamin I've found, but even it is misery-inducing.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm not above switching to chewables or gummy vitamins if that's really my only option...

Re: Vitamin help

  • I don't have a problem with pills, but for some reason, would never take my vitamin. Now, I love them. Why? Because I use the chewy ones!!!! I get them at Target for super cheap and they are so tasty, like a gummi bear. I seriously never forget to take them now because I love them so much. You might want to try something like that out.
  • Most doctors will recommend you vary your diet and forgo the multi-vitamin.

  • I had the same trouble taking my pre-natals and switched to Flinstones.  My dr had no problem with it because it contained all of the same nutrients as the adult pills.

Yeah, see, I had a long talk with both my doctors (GP and Gyn) and they both said based on my diet, schedule, activity, etc. that until I really, truly, totally commit to varying the foods (which I've struggles with...well, forever) that I need to be taking one.

Plus, they both said if I want to have a baby (in the future, that is), it's better to be on "the safe side" and take the MV to be 100% sure I'm getting those vitamins. *shrug*

Gummy bear vitamins do sound good...

  • Grr... the Nest ate my first response.  Short answer - just take the chewable/flinstones/etc.  It will give you basically the same nutritional benefits.  Compare the labels and figure out if there are any shortfalls and if you dont think you're getting enough of that vitamin in your diet you can get the individual pill which will likely be smaller and easier to take.

The other option would be to just keep practicing... I used to have similar issues, now I'm (unfortunately) taking 5 pills, including prenatal and fish oil which are both large every night and I swallow them all at once.  You do get used to it.

  • Then go with the kiddo ones, or see if you can find a gel cap. No clue if they make multivitamins in a gel cap, but those are generally easier to swallow and have less taste.

  • The chewables are good, but another option is a liquid multivitamin. I've only seen them at gnc or the vitamin shoppe though.

  • Honestly, if you can get past the difficulty swallowing it, try taking the vitamins at night.  I take all my vitamins before I go to bed and I never get nauseous.  If I take them in the morning (even with a full breakfast), I get violently sick.  It's weird how at night  my stomach is much less sensitive to it.

  • I take the one-a day women's and a fish oil pill. I hate swallowing pills too. I just shove them in the back of my throat, one at a time. I also take them after I eat something because if I don't, I get nauseous too.

    This exactly.

Triddo.  I went from taking 0 pills to taking MANY.  I take 1 prenatal, 2 omega 3, 1 folic acid, 1 vitamin D every day and usually in one fell swoop.  I also take my vitamins at night because of sensitive tummy.

  • Hmmm, interesting. I did used to take the vitamin at night and (aside from hating to swallow big pills - but yes, that is something I should get over) I never got sick. It's only been recently since I started taking it when I wake up instead.

Perhaps I'll switch back to nighttime at least through the end of this bottle and see if the nausea goes away.

  • When I asked my OB what he recommended for a prenatal, he said as long as it has the appropriate level of vitamins and minerals, especially folic acid, that it didn't matter what kind it was or whether it was labeled prenatal or not.  Before TTC I had good luck with a berry flavored one...still a big pill, but it tasted like a creme saver.

Now I just take a generic Target prenatal.  Taking them at night fends off the nausea that I get if I take them during waking hours.
