Where to buy beef/cow?

My husband and I were talking to friends who live out of this state over the weekend who buy ? a cow to store in their freezer? does anyone else do this and if so where do you buy ? a cow from?? Thanks!

  • I think you can do this through any butcher shop.

    My parents buy 1/4 cow each year, my mom's cousin is a cattle farmer, so they buy the meat from her cousin and it's processed/packaged at the butcher shop in the small town where they all grew up. My parents just go to the butcher shop to pick up all the meat when it's ready.

    If you don't know someone who is a cattle farmer, you can probably just go to a butcher shop and ask to buy 1/2 a cow. A small-town butcher is probably going to have better prices than somewhere in the Twin Cities. My parents pay something like $3 a pound, which includes cheaper things like ground chuck, but also some really great cuts of steak, so in the end, it evens out to be a pretty great deal.

  • Ditto pps.  We did this one year but DH's aunt/uncle raise beef cattle so we bought into one of theirs basically.  I can't remember what we paid but it wasn't terrible and we had a lot of meat.  I'd try the Farmer's Market.  The store I work at does crop shares but I think you'll get a better deal buying it more directly.  PM me if you want more info about the crop share though.  It is nice to get it right from the farmer though because you can request special cuts.

  • We go in with a friend on one through a farmer. I don't know where, but I bet you could find one with a bit of googling. We just get a group together to split a whole cow. Awesome beef and a way better price than the grocery store.

  • My father raises Black Angus Cattle.  He generally sells by word of mouth and referrals.  People will buy 1/4, 1/2 or even a whole steer and then pay for the processing, you can pick what kind of cuts you want. The butcher at the meat locker can go over that with you as well as the costs. It is generally cheaper to buy directly from the farmer than buy beef from the grocery store.  I am lucky as he supplies DH and I with free beef :) can't complain there!

  • We just picked up our beef on Saturday.  We got the cow from DH's cousin and had it processed at a place in WI.   It came to $1500 and we ended up with the following:

    202 lbs of hambuger

    49 patty packages (4 patties at 1/4 lb each)

    102 steaks (various cuts)

    35 roasts (arm, chuck, rump)

    Both of our families will buy some from us.  The last time we ordered was about 2 years ago.  This amount filled up 2 smaller chest freezers and a standard top fridge freezer.

    It's great because the meat is very lean and you know exactly where it came from and how it was raised!

  • We used Spring Brook Meats in Elk Mound, WI (by Eau Claire).  Their number is 715-664-8585.  I will need to get the phone # for DH's cousin.

  • Go to a co-op that has a butcher, a lot of co-ops have locally raised beef and can work with yo uand the farm to get what you need.

     

    I know Valley Natural in Burnsville will, for instance.
